What’s new in Room 216?

poster that we enjoyed
looking at!
In Reading Workshop we focused on identifying and
organizing information about a topic. We read a passage
about flying squirrels and took notes about squirrels:
behavior, appearance and facts we found to be interesting. We
completed a graphic organizer/table highlighting the
important information and discussed how good readers use
this strategy (note taking) when reading nonfiction text to
help them visualize and remember facts about a given topic.

In Math Workshop, we discovered that math could be
yummy! We listened to the book The Doorbell Rang. The
characters had to divide 12 cookies by 2, 4, 6 and 12 people.
We then had 12 cookies of our own to divide by 24 people!
This started a conversation about fractions! We practiced
using models to help us write division equations and talked
about how multiplication and division are related. Can you
draw a model for this equation: 10 2 = 5?

We started a new unit in Social Studies which focused on
how our community has changed since the 1800’s (which is
when Dublin was founded.) Many of us were fascinated to
hear about the legend of Leatherlips. Next week we will
continue revealing facts about how our city has grown/
changed over time!
Upcoming Events &Reminders:
VALENTINE PARTY! Our classroom Valentine Party is Friday,
February 12th. Students will be making a bag to collect their
Valentines in during the party. Please use the class list sent home
on 1/28 to help fill out Valentine cards!
NO SCHOOL FEBRUARY 15th & 26th: There is no school for
students on Monday, February 15th in honor of Presidents’ Day.
There will be no school on Friday,
Feb. 26th (Staff Work Day).
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: Conferences are February
23rd & 25th. Please let me know by next Wednesday (2/10) if you
would like to schedule a time/day to meet.
