Chabot College Fall 2010 Course Outline for Art 20 ALL MEDIA SCULPTURE Catalog Description: 20 - All Media Sculpture (May be repeated 3 times) 3 units Concentrated individual studies in sculpture, designed to provide opportunity for continued investigation in the possibilities of a particular sculptural medium for the purpose of creating individual expression. Repeatable for credit if medium is changed and appropriate recommended courses are completed. 2 hour lecture, 4 hours studio. [Typical contact hours: lecture 35, studio 70] Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. compose a limited number of carefully considered and constructed works of personal expression; 2. apply self-motivated design and/or formal concepts to the previously experienced introductory course experiments; 3. develop their skills in craftsmanship and better understand the capabilities and limitations of the mediums chosen; 4. employ alternative materials beyond traditional media such as wood, stone, and metal. Slides and video of a variety of well known artists will be shown as examples of what personal expression can be; 2. employ self-motivated design and/or formal concepts to the previously experienced introductory course experiments; 3. skill development in craftsmanship and understanding the capabilities and limitations of the mediums chosen. A variety of examples through lectures, slides and video will be given. Create a relief sculpture 14" x 12" minimum, made from at least 10 different materials. A demonstration will be done with unfamiliar materials b. Create a piece involving imagination based on concepts developed from a collection of objects that tell a personal history. d. Prepare an individual oral presentation about a note worthy sculptor who has used alternative media. 2. Methods of Evaluation a. Measure improvement of craftsmanship using portfolio of class projects. b. Evaluate of creative application of personal style through a comparison of styles of masterworks with student work. c. Individual and group critiques of assigned projects. d. Final oral critique of a portfolio of assignments completed Textbook(s) Typical: None Special Student Materials: Depending on the medium chosen, the students may have to purchase clay, wood, stone, bronze, aluminum, steel or whatever else would be needed to complete their objectives.
