Chabot College/Las Positas College February 1993 Course Outline for Art 10 DESIGN AND MATERIALS Catalog Description: 10 - Design and Materials 3 units Introduction to the basic elements of design: line, texture, value, shape, color, light, and spatial concepts. Experimentation with paper, cardboard, cloth, etc. Emphasis on two-dimensional design. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should: 1. develop a sense of respect for each product no matter how simple or brief the experiment; disciplined control and craftsmanship is required; 2. acquire competence in handling various media and related techniques along with an ability to discuss the objectives using proper terminology; 3. develop through the manipulation of plastic and formal elements of design. Course Content: 1. Symmetrical and asymmetrical balance 2. Recognition and development of the relationship of positive and negative shapes 3. A value scale of all steps including black and white will be matted for presentation 4. Expressive attributes of line, e.g.: uses of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions 5. Textural contrasts 6. Illusions of space by means other than perspective (line only, shape, and value) 7. Rhythm in pattern and shape (progressive, alternating, flowing, repetitive) 8. Emphasis to achieve unity 9. Three dimensional assignment. A sculpture as form seen from all sides-designing mass and void. 10. Appropriate analytical and evaluation skills of your own art works, classmates, and professional artists' works. 11. Introduction to color theory. Methods of Presentation: 1. Lectures 2. Individual criticism 3. Technical assistance with the various media 4. Slide presentation Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: 1. Craftsmanship development. 2. Degree of apparent understanding of the theory or concepts presented. 3. Individual creative application, integrated with points 1 and 2.
