Thanks to your generosity during last weekend's World Refugee Day collection, ARRUPE (Assisting Refugee Resettlement Using Parish Energies) raised nearly $1200 for our ministry to refugees. In addition to funding our ongoing housewarming efforts, the proceeds will help underwrite summer programs for refugee children here in Boston and also in Amman, Jordan, where many persecuted Iraqi Christians have sought sanctuary. For more information about ARRUPE or to find out how you might get involved, please contact Jane Devlin(devlin.jane@gmail.com) or Anne Murphy (ammurphy@verizon.net). Thank you! BEGINNING NEXT WEEK, THE BULLETIN WILL BE PRINTED EVERY TWO WEEKS FOR THE MONTHS OF JULY AND AUGUST. LITTLE ROCK BIBLE GROUP - “The Remnant Group” meets Wednesdays in the Lannon Chapel from 7:15 pm – 8:30 pm. We will see a video of the upcoming Sunday readings and follow it with a group discussion of questions and answers pertaining to the readings. It’s a great way to prepare for the Sunday homily! Newcomers are welcome. Refreshments will be served. If you have any questions, please call John Dafarra at 781-899-9540. FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION FOR 2009 – 2010 St. Ignatius Faith Formation has begun the registration process for the 2009 – 2010 academic year and will continue throughout the summer. As usual, the earlier you register, the easier it is for our office. Because we are grateful when you register early, we will ask for a “pre-registration” donation of $200 per family. After September 20, our registration fee will be $250 per family. How to register: Via Email An electronic copy of our registration form will be sent out starting June 4. You can return it via email – please be sure to sign the bottom in acknowledgement of the policies listed on the reverse side of the form. If you choose this method, please submit a check to the rectory at your earliest convenience. Via the web Our registration form will be posted online beginning June 4. You can download the form there and return it via email or via traditional post. Again, please do sign the form to acknowledge that you are aware of the policies on the reverse side. Via Traditional Completed registration forms can be mailed to: Amy Chapman, St. Ignatius Church, 28 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467. Register in Person Call or email for an appointment to come to the rectory anytime Jerry or I are in the office (usually every day of the week except Saturday) and we will help you with the paperwork. You can also pick up a registration form and mail it back to us, or you can drop off a completed registration form in my mailbox. Donations We are very grateful for the donations that are given to our parish for our Faith Formation program. While we operate on a largely volunteer basis, textbooks, supplies, retreats, and sacramental preparation materials add up. Your donations are the key to helping our program maintain its high standards. If you return your registration form in person or through the post, we welcome donations along with your registration form. If you return your form electronically, you can submit a check to the rectory in person or through the mail; either way please mark it to Amy Chapman’s attention. If you wish, your Faith Formation donation can be drawn from your Pledge for the Greater Glory account. In order for us to do this, you must notify us in writing (email is sufficient). Look Up and See In ancient times, art and architecture was used in churches to teach and inspire the faithful. Our church continues that tradition, using stone, wood and glass. You are invited to take a new look at our church, to see its beauty and to allow it to deepen your faith. The original main altar and the altar steps are made of a warm ivory-toned marble from Botticino, Italy. Carved on the front panel of the altar and brought out in gold leaf is a Christogram with the Greek letters chi (Χ) and rho (Ρ), the first two letters of the name of Christ, superimposed. To the left and right of the chi rho are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha (Α) and omega (Ω), symbolizing the eternity of God. Toward the outer edges of this front panel is a carved decoration of lilies, also accentuated with gold leaf. The reredos, that is the screen, behind the main altar, is a massive, richly carved structure of fine-grained West Virginia oak. On it the Crucifixion is depicted. Within the central panel, the life-size corpus of Christ is made of white bass wood. The smaller statues of Our Lady and of Saint John are carved from coarse-grained New England oak. The border of the central panel is carved to resemble the branches of the grape, symbolizing our union with Christ who said, "I am the vine; you are the branches." Surmounting the canopy above the crucifix is the symbol of the papacy, the tiara with crossed keys. Recently, in accordance with the instructions in the Constitutions on Sacred Liturgy, a predella, or platform, has been built, leading from the sanctuary out into the nave of the church, to bring the altar closer to the congregation. Built of mahogany and oak, it features a cross in the center. It is a fitting home for the altar table, which features carvings of vines and grapes, echoing those in the reredos, surrounding the letters “IHS”, which comprises the first three Greek letters of "IHΣOYΣ" (Jesus), later interpreted as "Iesus Hominum Salvator", Jesus, Savior of Mankind, which is the center of the seal of the Society of Jesus.
