T HE T HIRD S UNDAY OF L ENT – M A R C H 11, 2012
THE READINGS FOR THE FOURTH OF SUNDAY OF LENT ARE:
2CHR. 36: 14-16
EPH. 2: 4-10
JN. 3:14-21
THE EXAMEN
During this Lenten season, there will be an Examination of Consciousness following communion. The “Examen”
is at the heart of Ignatian prayer and we hope that this Spiritual Exercise during Lent will enrich your prayer and
reflection. The Examen questions for the Third Sunday of Lent are listed below. In the tradition of Ignatius, we
open our hearts and minds to God’s loving guidance through the spirit of Jesus Christ. Together let us reflect on
our day with God as our guide and Jesus walking beside us.
THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
Lord, we realize that everything, even ourselves, is a gift from you.
How has God’s Word given you new life?
Lord, open our eyes and ears to be more honest with ourselves.
In what ways have you resisted God’s loving guidance?
Lord, show us what has been happening to us and in us this day.
In what ways has the wisdom of God enlightened you?
Lord, we are still learning to grow in your love.
What are your stumbling blocks on your journey toward truth?
Lord, let us look with longing toward the future.
How can you love and serve the Lord and others this Lent?
LENTEN TAIZE EVENING PRAYER
We are celebrating Taize Prayer every other Monday evening. The program will continue this Monday evening,
March 12th, and again on March 26th. This candlelit Evening Prayer Liturgy features simple singing, prayer and
meditation. Please join at 7:15 pm in the Upper Church.

LENTEN RETREAT AT EASTERN POINT - March 23rd – 25th
WILL YOU COME AND FOLLOW ME? - An Invitation to Know, Love and Serve the Lord!
For the past twenty-three years, the parish has offered a weekend retreat at Eastern Point in Gloucester in the fall
and spring. This parish retreat has always been a powerful experience of grace in the context of a remarkably
beautiful sight with views of the Ocean. There is nothing quite like an Eastern Point sunrise over the Atlantic or a
sunset over Niles beach. The peace and tranquility of the Retreat House is so completely out of the ordinary for
those of us who live such busy lives that it takes some time to "relax" into the stillness and just "be". How often do
we give ourselves the opportunity to simply "be"? There is nothing that has to be done or accomplished on this
weekend. It's just a time to let go and "let God" be there for you.
I'm making this impassioned appeal for you to consider coming to the retreat because we are committed to have a
certain number of participants. As of today, we need ten more people to meet this required number. If you are
interested and are concerned about the cost of the retreat, we will find a way to help. It is looking more and more as
if we need to consider having only one retreat a year at Eastern Point. For now, however, we hope you won't let
this amazing opportunity pass you by.

PLAY TIME! The bid is in so it is time to raise money to build the playground at St. Anne's Church in Jamaica.
We are looking for anyone interested or experienced in fundraising. We need to raise $25,000.00 to make this
dream a reality for the St. Anne's community. All children deserve a clean and safe place to play. Please contact
Ginny Galeota at ginnygaleota@yahoo.com or Portia Durbin at durbinpc@comcast.net if you are interested in
becoming part of this exciting venture.

OPERATION RICE BOWL: WEEK THREE
Catholic Social Teaching Focus: Rights and Responsibilities
We must take responsibility to protect the rights of all people. These rights include
the right to life, food, shelter, education, and employment, along with political and
cultural rights.
In El Salvador, CRS supports the Mi Cuenca project to bring clean water to families and
communities. Clean drinking water leads to better health, and clean water for irrigation leads to
healthier and safer foods. Safe food and water are fundamental rights that must be protected for
all people.
