GROWING IN LOVE AND WISDOM: ADAPTING BUDDHIST MEDITATION FOR CHRISTIAN PRAYER— AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION AND BOOK SIGNING (FEBRUARY 3) Drawing from her recently published book, Growing in Love and Wisdom: Tibetan Buddhist Sources for Christian Meditation (Oxford University Press), Susan Stabile will explore some of the common values and understandings that underlie Christianity and Buddhism and talk about how interreligious engagement can offer mutual enrichment for people of both traditions. Her particular focus will be how meditation practices drawn from the Buddhist tradition (fifteen of which are presented in her book) can enrich Christian spirituality, and the event will include a guided meditation based on one of the book’s meditations. In the course of this exploration, she will talk about her experience in both faith traditions, each of which has contributed to the deepening of her spirituality. Growing in Love and Wisdom will be available for purchasing and signing. For more on Susan Stabile, visit http://susanjoan.wordpress.com. Sponsored by the Spiritual Life Commission on Sunday, February 3 at 4:00 pm in the Choir Room. Please RSVP to the Parish Office at 617-552-6102 or ignatius@bc.edu. BOOK DISCUSSION On February 10th, there will be a discussion of the book, Mary, by Shalem Asch at 11:15 in the Parish Center. Though Jesus is ultimately the central character in this book, the perspective is that of his mother. As one reviewer writes, "The experience for me was eye-opening and penetrating. Our culture has been so Christianized (and post-Christianized) that we do not recognize the radically disruptive nature of the historical Jesus event." Come to the discussion and share your experience of reading this highly regarded book. 1. Kane, CSP, Brian McDermott, SJ and Joan Nuth for a special retreat-pilgrimage as we trace the life and spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola in Spain. We begin in Bilbao with a visit to the Guggenheim Museum and continue to the town of Azpeitia for a three day retreat near the Sanctuary of Loyola. We will have retreat talks on the life of Ignatius of Loyola and special prayer opportunities at various pilgrimage sites nearby. We journey next to Aranzazu where Ignatius prayed to the Virgin, then on to Javier, the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier. We will enjoy some time at the lofty Benedictine monastery of Montserrat and the next day we remember “The Pilgrim” at the cave of Manresa where Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises. We conclude our pilgrimage in Barcelona with a festive Eucharist and special sightseeing program around the city. For a brochure and more information, contact Fr. Kane at the School of Theology and Ministry at BostonCollege, thomas.kane@bc.edu or 617-552-6520 3.
