(John) Introduction of 2 guests – Assistant Administrator, Mr. Pete Roback
and Assistant Administrator Dr. Tim Conboy. Mr. Roback discussed the
Registration Process. It begins at all 4 high schools in January. All students
went to the registration home room and were educated to the process on
January 9. Time for students to talk with teachers/parents begins now. The
second step begins on Monday, January 28. This will be Registration
Advisory Day and all teachers will have conversations with their students.
Online registration will be open for 1 week and end on Monday, Feb 4 using
School View. The third registration event will be to collect registration
documents from students in their homeroom on February 7 including the
completed registration forms. The r registration web site can be accessed by
selecting the special Icon found at the school’s home page. This website has
all of the information regarding registration. There is also an online
registration video – which was already shown to the students last week in
homeroom. This is new and also includes the registration guidelines. Current
8th graders will be coming for a registration meeting this week will get hard
copies of the registration guides. We will still encourage 8th graders to build
out a 4 year plan and to map it out. Next year a six year plan will be
introduced. At the Registration Web Site There is a link – for a career wheel.
Pete developed a link from RHS courses to align with the Career Wheel
found on the backside of students EXPLORE and PLAN results. Students
may use this to help find elective courses that might be a good match. There
is also a time for kids to attend a presentation of elective courses at the
school on January 17 in the theatre. From the ACT site – there are college
readiness benchmarks going back to the 8th grade EXPLORE test in order to
guide students in their course selection decisions. A good place to start your
planning is with your child’s guidance counselor. New initiative - all barriers
were lifted to participate in Honors. In the past, Teachers provided
recommendations - this has now been removed for students/parents to selfselect. Although it is up to students/parents to make their selections,
teachers will still offer advice/counsel.
6:56 – 7:53
(John) Shooting in Connecticut was added to the agenda in response to a
number of parents who had expressed their concerns regarding the topic.
Dr. Conboy was asked to share information regarding this school and
district’s approach. Overall, parents should be confident that steps are in
place. For example, there is anonymous link on the website – Rosemount
Confidential which still exists and is being used. Series of questions on the

site that allows the reporter to share information and is then submitted. The
recipients include: the 9th grade assistant principal, the assistant principal’s
office secretary, Campus Security, Officer Rosa, and Dr. Conboy so that the
report is immediately seen. Every report is analyzed and acted on as
appropriate. Fighting notifications are being posted. This notification
program has stymied the fighting issue. Conclusion… we are making an
impact. The Connecticut Tragedy has ramped up everything. As a note,
most incidents of mass school violence are not about people coming in from
the front door - they are usually by those on the inside or recent students
coming back to the school. There have been ramped up meetings with law
enforcement to increase the number of drills because of recent fighting
incidents and inappropriate statements. Fistfights did happen during the time
of the Connecticut tragedy but, this was only coincidental. Persons under the
radar are the individuals who usually commit these acts. Many times others
knew about the attacks before it happened. Information by others is the best
resource. Searching private property (cars, lockers, etc.) for dangerous items
is allowed by the school officials - police are brought in later because police
hold one at a higher standard. Once a concern is brought to our attention - a
team is created for action (includes security, staff, police and psychologist).
Addressing the rumors of fights occurring just prior to the holidays has been
confirmed. The important issue is the degree to which these altercations
disrupt the general orderly and calm school environment. To make it clear as
to what constitutes a fight – it happens between two individuals who become
involved in mutual combat beyond pushing or shoving. It hardly ever
happens with Seniors and most often occurs with Freshman. An Assault is
when one individual strikes or hits another while he or she attempts to protect
themselves. Aggravated Assault – results in serious injury. Fighting results
in an out of school suspension and the offenders are always criminally
charged usually with disorderly conduct. We believe that by having them
criminally charged, this will deter these types of physical altercations. We do
track suspensions and over the past five years we average about a
fight/month. Last year, only two fights occurred. A parent called in
September asking, given the fights that had occurred, if their child would be
safe. This was immediately responded to with assurances that he/she would
be. Most fights are precipitated by comments between the offenders which
usually start on Facebook. Because our teachers share in the supervision of
the school, the overall climate is very positive. In addition, we are lucky to
have great students here. Finally, there are rumors circulating that should
there be additional fights, that school would be closed for a period of time;
there is no truth to or basis for this rumor.
