Power Generation and Distribution (Offshore)
R&D Highlight: The Subsea
Power Grid – A Virtual Tour
Improving offshore economics through
enhanced subsea power distribution
Operators leave significant amounts of pay
behind in offshore environments, despite the
elevated costs and risks associated with drilling
5,000 to 7,000 meters into the earth – beyond
the 2,000 to 3,000 meters between the ocean
floor and the surface.
Subsea processing facilities are critical to
boosting recovery. They consist of multiple
components, including pumps and compressors, all of which require power. Currently,
however, there are limited means to transmit
power underwater over long distances.
Typically today, single power feeders are run
from topside facilities, to each specific consumer on the sea floor.
These solutions add complexity and cost to
operations; in addition, they are simply not
viable options for long step-outs, or for situations that require relatively high power output
or a high number of power consumers.
Already a premier provider of subsea solutions
to the oil and gas industry, Siemens is in the
advanced stages of developing a Subsea Power
Grid, designed to optimize distribution of power
to subsea processing equipment, which in turn
play an increasingly critical role in boosting
production in deepwater environments.
The groundbreaking technology represents
a radical departure from more conventional
approaches to subsea power distribution, such
as running single power feeders from land or
placing power equipment on floating facilities.
It holds the potential to make previously unrecoverable hydrocarbon resources recoverable.
This ‘virtual reality’ presentation will focus
on the challenges inherent in supplying subsea
components with power. It will also touch
on the critical role connectors and associated
expertise play in subsea power supply and
finally, the objectives and progress to date
of the Subsea Power Grid project.

Proper Gas Turbine Selection
for FPSOs
Innovations
in Drive Technologies
Meet the demands of FPSOs
with the right gas turbine
High-availability, medium-voltage, variable
speed drives for pumping and compression
The FPSO business is one of the most demanding
on its components. Gas turbines in the range
of 4 MW to 66 MW are commonly included in
FPSO power packages as mechanical drives
and for electrical power generation. Due to
their small footprint, gas turbines from Siemens
offer quick installation of these pre-tested
modules, as well an excellent power-to-weightratio. Our gas turbines are designed for core
exchange, which reduces on-site maintenance
and provides outstanding availability that has
been proven in FPSO applications. Depending
upon the application, gas turbines can be
operated on a broad variety of fuels, including
high H2S, crude or heavy fuel oils using Dry
Low Emission technology for low level NOX
emissions.
Lars Higander, lars.higander@siemens.com
For over 20 years, Voltage Source Inverter
(VSI), medium-voltage (MV), Variable Speed
Drives (VSDs) have been used for pumping
and compression in onshore, offshore and
even subsea applications. The latest in multicell, multi-level inverter technology expand
the offering in terms of power, power quality
and availability. The superior output power
quality of these VSDs allows for very long
distances to driven equipment (without the
use of transformers) and higher rotating
speeds (without the use of gearboxes).
Offshore Production
Multi-cell MV VSDs have even been proven
in combination with high speed, very long
cable and permanent magnet motors (PPM).
Additionally, multi-cell topology with a transparent Cell Bypass feature maximizes VSD
availability; tolerates faults in the power
circuit; and continues operation of the drive.

Gas transportation costs between producer
and consumer countries are an important
factor in the competitiveness of gas supplies.
Whether via pipelines or as liquefied natural
gas (LNG), Siemens’ compressor portfolio
offers flexibility, efficiency and reliability in
gas transport.
Two case studies will be discussed during
this presentation:
•Fixed speed, motor-driven centrifugal compressor trains will be used at the Hangzhou
Zhongtai Cryogenic Technology Corporation
LNG plant in China. The drive and control,
using variable inlet guide vane assemblies,
provide more efficient and reliable operation
than conventional compressor solutions
using throttle valve or speed control.
•Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS)
in Turkey uses enhanced Siemens’ pipeline
compressor package technology for increased
efficiency.

Case Study:
Recurring Compressor Failure
Aftermarket support for recurring failure
of legacy compression train
Poor reliability in compression systems result
in high maintenance costs and low production
efficiency. This presentation will discuss a case
study of a repeated compression system failure
and the steps which Dresser-Rand – A Siemens
Business employ to:
•Return production as quickly as possible.
•Investigate complex failure modes.
•Improve reliability and availability on ageing
production facilities.

Siemens’ innovative single shaft, vertically
split turbo compressor casing is designed
to compress gases of any molecular weight,
and is optimized for those with low molecular
weight. The STC-SV compressor is designed
for use in high pressure applications, covering
a discharge pressure range of up to 1,000 bar.
All compressor internals are assembled in a
bundle to allow easy axial removal from the
casing shell without the need to remove
process gas piping. A wide variety of sealing
systems (labyrinth seals, carbon ring seals
and mechanical dry gas seals) completes the
reliable compressor design.
Software
Additionally, as a leading supplier of key
components in midstream projects, Siemens

Water Solutions
Improving Oil Recovery
Selecting and integrating the right
water-related solutions for EOR/CEOR
Siemens offers a comprehensive range of
water-related solutions that help increase the
recovery factor in oil reservoirs. Among other
technologies, membrane-based sulphate and
low-salinity systems can improve oil recovery
and are based on mature and proven tech
nologies, but operational success also depends
upon proper selection and integration of the
right technologies into one, seamless system
design. This presentation reviews factors that
may impact CAPEX, OPEX, weight, size and
availability when choosing a low-salinity
system for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
or Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR).
