Panther Tracks NEOSHO COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2012-2013 Issue II Greetings Another year at Neosho County Community College has come and gone. What an amazing year its been. The successes of NCCC and our students have been profound. The baseball team made it to the Junior College World Series, Leslie Rosario from Cross Country was Regional Champion, Coach Peterson was named Man of the Year by his fellow coaches and Coach Murry celebrated his 750th win, we added more students than any other community college, a new softball field and soccer complex was built, the gym was completely renovated, we won a national 2012 Bellwether Finalist Award, and most importantly we had record numbers of graduates and enrollment continues to increase. It is with great confidence that I can say the 2012-13 year will be even more promising than the last. The Alumni Association wants to find all former NCCC and Chanute Junior College graduates. We want to invite all alumni to join our organization to help build a bridge between our past students and out current students. Your input is extremely important in helping to promote our school and build a stronger panther community. If you are interested in getting involved, have any ideas you would like to share, or just want to make a connection please get intouch with Sarah Smith, 620.431.2820 x 501. We’d love to hear from you. Once a Panther!, Always a Panther! Louisiana Boil Golf Tournament Washington & New York City On May 16, a group of Neosho County Community College alumni, students and friends departed Chanute, Kansas for a six day trip to Washington, DC and New York City. The group was composed of 13 members: Amber Vale, Terri Showalter, Courtney Showalter, Hunter Nunnencamp, Ken and Lois Sanders, Vivian Rowan, Nancy Clemens, Tim Tarkelly, Paul and Sarah Smith, William Norris and Sarah Owens the tour leader. Even with varied ages and travel experiences the group forged friendships quickly. After reaching Washington we met and combined with two groups, one from Tennessee and one from Missouri. The Washington adventure began with seeing the National Archives and touring the Smithsonian museums. An evening guided sightseeing tour of Washington DC included the memorials, the tidal basin and the White House. Other highlights of Washington and the area were tours of the Senate and House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, Embassy Row and Georgetown and much more. To top the experience off a ghost tour in Alexandria, VA was an exciting treat. A walking tour of Midtown that included Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral, F.A.O Schwartz, Trump Tower, Times Square, Grand Central Station kicked off the New York City portion of the trip. On the first evening everyone enjoyed a beautiful view of the city from the Empire State building. A Ferry ride took the group to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Everyone enjoyed Trinity Church, Wall Street, South Street Seaport, Greenwich Village, East Village, SoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Ground Zero Memorial. Going to see the Broadway show Mama Mia was a highlight for the group and walking through Central Park, seeing the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a guided tour of the NBC Studios helped top the trip off. The last day was spent at the United Nations before we flew home. What a great trip! A very special thanks goes to Vivian Rowan and Sarah Smith for providing pictures. Panthers Through The Years In 1936 the 192 students of Chanute Junior College voted on the name Black Panthers for the college teams. Over they years there have been numerous renditions of the panther and later the name was shortened to Panthers. Since the late 90’s NCCC has had what we called the Shadow Panther. This year it was decided to update the panther at the same time we completed branding the college. After much time, care, and input our next panther has been unveiled. 1938 1946 1947 1977 1979 1984 1988 1990’s Heritage Family The 2012 Heritage Family is the Neely’s. Glen and Marge Neely both attended Chanute Junior College in the 40’s. Mr. Neely attended school in 1940-1942 and lettered in football. After serving in the Navy he returned to Kansas and finish his education at K-State. Mrs. Neely attended Chanute Junior College for 1 hour each morning before heading off to work at the Bank of Commerce. She graduated from PSU and taught in Chanute for 22 years. Glen and Marge had 6 children all of whom attended NCCC; Mary Neely Dunn, Jim Neely, Ann Neely Sullivan, Jane Neely Hansom, Robert Glen Neely (deceased) and Mark Neely. Who Are They Do you know who was in Blind Rage? They were members of the NCCJC Stage Band in 1973. If you know who they are please contact Sarah Smith at 620.431.2820 x 501 or ssmith@neosho.edu. Vivian Rowan When I was 5 years old, I was hospitalized in the old Johnson Hospital at 1st & Evergreen with Asthma. I can remember sitting up in my bed with a box of white Kleenex and making a red cross on them with crayons so I could pin them in my hair as nursing caps. I thought those nurses were magical and was thrilled when one of them gave me one of her REAL nurse’s caps to have as my very own! Then God wove my life into a different tapestry with lots of twists and turns and I wound up in Business College in Topeka after my High School graduation. I became first a legal secretary, and then a banker. I enjoyed my work immensely and then my life changed again. The bank I had worked in for 16 years closed. I was lucky enough to land a job at Neosho Memorial Hospital before my unemployment even started. That was in July of 1986. I had advanced to Business Office Manager when that 5 year old girl in me started saying “Hey, remember me? What about that nurse’s cap you wanted to wear?” So there I was in 1992, 46 years old, a divorced mother of four with two teenage daughters still at home and going back to school to become a nurse. Logistically, on paper, this would NEVER EVER WORK! But, this plan had the backing of God and I took that step in faith and never looked back. Oh yes, we ate a LOT of hot dogs & macaroni and cheese because the girls could cook that while Mom studied….and studied, and STUDIED HARD! Yes. Worth the effort? Oh my, YES! My proudest moment had to be standing at the podium in front of my classmates, instructors, administrators, family and friends with my gold Phi Theta Kappa stoll on, giving the “Non-Traditional Student” address. Who would have thought that could happen? I was truly blessed and the tears show in my picture accepting my diploma for an Associates of Applied Science Degree. I had worked hard and it had paid off! With NCCC’s track record, I knew that if I could get through that Nursing Program, I was almost guaranteed to pass the tough State Boards because nothing but excellence was acceptable of us. And, pass I did, and a Registered Nurse I became. Wow! I continued to work at Neosho Memorial, it changed to “Regional Medical Center” as a Registered Nurse, first on the 2nd floor when it was mostly postoperative patients, sometimes on Medical-Surgical, but from 2002 until my retirement in December 2011 in Labor and Delivery and it was the love of my life. I never once got tired of seeing a new life come into the world. I felt like I had seen the full circle…I had held the hand of a dying patient until their heart stopped beating, and heard the cry of another taking their first breath. What job could be more rewarding than that? I was guided to that end by instructors who really cared and mentors who taught me new things every day I went to work! I still carry on my nursing skills in retirement doing volunteer work whenever I can. I’ll be making my 5th Mission Trip to Haiti in January, 2013 where I help out in a clinic in a mountain village there. I’ve found this to be my passion and so appreciate how my family has supported me in this, although I know they worry. Two years ago my Granddaughter got to go with me to Haiti and now she is a nursing student at NCCC as well. This certainly makes me proud! Besides my four wonderful children, I have 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. This keeps me busy attending any of their activities that I can. I love to travel and enjoyed being part of the NCCC Alumni trip to Washington DC & NYC in May of this year. We had a wonderful time! Thank you, NCCC for all you have done to enrich my life. We are so lucky in Neosho County to have such a fine institution of knowledge! The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
