We continue to sell tax credits to improve
the Chanute campus. There are still two
years of the Deferred Maintenance tax
credits available for individuals or businesses
who have a Kansas tax liability. There are
several projects at the Chanute campus
that could benefit from this program. Both
Stoltz Hall and Rowland Hall renovation are
projects that will benefit from the sale of the
tax credits.
The Alumni and Friends Association is
working hard to bring alumni back in touch
with Neosho County Community College.
There are many things to be proud about at
both campuses. The new Ottawa facility is
obviously something to be proud of during
this time as it was built without any tax
dollars. The baseball infield has allowed the
Panthers to play when other teams could not
be out in the field. Again we have had the
pleasure of larger colleges asking to use our
baseball field to get their games played.
Neosho County Community College
continues to grow and so does the
Foundation. We have increased giving at
the individual level, at the business level,
foundation level, and at the grant level
as our endowed funds continue to grow.
There is still so much that needs to be
accomplished. The list is 40 million dollars
long! The Foundation can and will continue
to advance the mission of Neosho County
Community College with your help and
make it a better place now and for future
faculty, staff and students!

Education is all a matter of building bridges.
A year ago I wrote you a letter for the
Annual Report and told you about the
Foundation’s involvement in the new
Ottawa Campus. The approximately 52,000
square foot facility became a reality on
March 28, 2011 when we opened the doors
for the first time to NCCC students that
morning. It is an impressive sight and the
pictures you can view on the NCCC website
are very nice but do not do this project
justice. You need to see it in person! Many
hours of labor by the staff at Neosho County
Community College went into making this
building one of the premier institutions in
Kansas.
NCCC Foundation
Board of Directors
Ralph Ellison
Dear NCCC Alumni and Friends,
What an exciting year! I am so proud
of what the College students, faculty,
administration, and staff have accomplished
this year. My first year as President of
Neosho County Community College has
been very successful!
We opened the new $8.1 million Ottawa
campus on time and on budget to rave
reviews. I heard so many positive comments
about how this facility has elevated Ottawa
and Franklin County. There is a lot to be
proud of in the new facility, with the first of
its kind Simulation Hospital, the Teaching
and Learning Center, and state-of-the-art
classrooms. I am so appreciative of everyone
on the design team that helped to create
this wonderful campus. And we built this
campus without any state or local tax money
in the budget. Student fees paid for nearly
everything, with grants and a few gifts
making up the rest. Amazing!
Enrollment went very well in 20102011. The College was up about 8.5%
in enrollment, led by the online campus
which grew about 32% this year! Summer
enrollment was up over 14% in 2010-2011.
It is my belief that the agrarian calendar is
going away in higher education as many
if not most students now go to class 12
months a year.
This year our baseball team set records in
number of wins for the year. Among the
numerous awards won by various college
athletes, one of our baseball students, Adam
Giacalone, was named MVP of the league!
We excelled in welding as well. For the
third straight year an NCCC student was
the State Welding Champion. Garrett Ross
brought home that honor for us.
Our own Randy Kettler was honored with
a Region 5 National College Instructional
Administrator’s Leadership Award this year.
And the College honored Marie Gardner,
math/computer instructor, and Jon Seibert,
computer applications specialist, with the
NISOD Award of Excellence. The students
chose the maintenance team, and especially
Joe Ward, as their NCCC Employees of the
Year, which was very touching.
Life’s most persistent and
urgent question is,“What
are you doing for others?”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
The College met our Kansas Board of
Regents Performance Agreements and
received 100% funding of new money next
year (of course, there is no new money for
next year, but it’s the thought that counts
right?). We also met all of our Carl Perkins
Grant indicators in technical education for
things like percentage completion and nontraditional enrollment.
We started a new program at the Ottawa
campus in Surgical Technology, a program
that will be coming to Chanute in 2012.
We are ready to offer the Occupational
Therapy Assistant program in 2011-2012 in
Ottawa with already over 100 students on a
waiting list to get in.
And, most importantly, we had 371 students
receive a degree or certificate during this year
and 131 students get their GED through
three quarters.The Southeast Kansas Adult
Basic Education consortium that NCCC
runs has more GED graduates than any
other program in the state right now.
Thus completes my first year as President
of NCCC. The Board of Trustees has
been generous and has offered me a year
extension to my contract, for which I am
truly grateful. I have been renewed through
June 2014. I love this job, this Board, the
communities of our service area, these
employees, and these students. It is such an
honor to lead NCCC.
Neosho County Community College
continues to grow. Currently, NCCC is
the 11th largest community college in the
State of Kansas. This continued growth is
a two edge sword. It is great to be growing
and changing but it does put a strain on
many of the support systems at the college.
Admissions, advising, and financial aid have
contact with almost every student. And as
these numbers continue to grow the need
for financial assistance also grows; putting
a strain on the Foundation’s scholarship
monies. The demand for scholarship funds
has always been high but now the demand
has outgrown the funds by leaps and
bounds. If you are considering giving to
NCCC, consider an endowed scholarship.
It is a gift that will continue to give forever
in an area that helps the individual student
the most.
The Neosho County Community College
Foundation endowment funds have had a
bumpy ride since 2008. But some sound
investment decisions have kept it safe. Still
the market situation is a roller coaster ride
that no one can predict.
The mission of the Foundation is to support
the college and is apparent in the following
ways:
•The Sports Complex in partnership with
USD 413 is a great facility for our track
and soccer teams.
•Scholarships, we continue to give more and
larger scholarships each year. This year we
have approximately $60,000 in scholarship
monies to award to NCCC students.
•The new Ottawa Campus is a state of
the art 52,000 square foot facility and an
incredible addition to NCCC. Something
that the Foundation can be proud of for
years to come.
•The baseball field continues to be a source
of pride for the Panthers, whether we are
playing on the field or someone else is
renting the facility.
Do not go where the path may lead;
go instead where there is no path
and leave a trail.

The Kansas Board of Regents recently provided
enrollment numbers for all the community
colleges in Kansas for the academic year that
just ended. Once again, NCCC has grown
and is the 11th largest Community College in
Kansas. NCCC's giving figures remain strong
in spite of recent economic conditions. Giving
offers you the opportunity to strengthen a
vital community resource while offering a tax
deduction. A well-planned gift can help achieve
financial and charitable objectives as well as
personal goals. Your gift shapes the future of
the college by supporting students, programs,
and services.

Elda Bird
1936
Mrs. Eleda Bass Bird, was a member of the
Class of 1936, the first class at Chanute
Junior College. Graduated from Stark High
School and roomed together with her 2
roommates Laura Dale Dow and June Page.
The three of them lived in the upstairs of a
home they shared with several other females.
They lived in two rooms, a kitchen/living
room combination and a bedroom. They
shared a bathroom with the other tenants.
Mrs. Bird’s dream was to be a nurse, and she
went to Kansas City to fulfill that dream,
only to find out that she was too young to
enter Nursing School. So she returned home
to go to CJC the first year that it opened!
Of course, she never took a class in the new
facility because it burned to the ground.
Mrs. Bird along with her fellow classmates
began their education in multiple locations
across Chanute. She attended college for one
year and then sat for the County Teaching
Exam and received her first teaching
certificate in 1937. Her first experience
teaching was at Porterville. She taught in
a one-room school where she taught all
8 grades. She made $40.00 a month and
stayed with family friends while teaching.
Her first class was made-up of 1 young lady
and 12 young men. She bought and paid
for a Model A Coup, for her drive and back
forth to school. In the Winter, she had to be
at the school to start the heating stove before
the students arrived for classes at 9:00 a.m.,
she taught until 12:00 and then ate lunch
and had a break until 1:00 p.m. classes
continued until 4:00 p.m. after classes she
still had to clean the room before she could
leave for home. Mrs. Bird resides in Erie,
Kansas with her husband Harry. When
asked about the instructors at the Juco, she
remembered Ms. Sarah Holler as a very prim
lady who taught English, and Ms. Stoltz was
an excellent instructor. All-in-all going to
college at Chanute was a good thing.
Marllin L. Simon, a native of Southeast
Kansas, grew up in Huntington, Indiana
and returned to Chanute to attend Neosho
County Community College. He obtained
an A. A. from NCCC, a B. S. from Emporia State, a M. S. from Michigan State and
a Ph. D. in Physics from the University of
Missouri. He has taught at Emporia State,
Southwest Minnesota State, and has been
at Auburn University for the past 39 years
where he now holds the position Professor Emeritus. Awards received include the
Universities top awards for teaching and
outreach, NSF Science Faculty
Fellow, Carr Endowed Professorship, Peagram Medal of Excellence, and the Authors
Recognition Award. His teaching related
publications include a Laboratory Textbook,
lab manuals, study guides, instructor and
student solution manuals for several different Physics texts, and online diagnostic tests
for introductory physics students. He has
obtained grants from the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of
Education, Department of Defense, State of
Alabama and NASA. He is married to the
former Mary C. Parsons of Chanute and
they have two sons: Kent, a colonel in the
USMC and Jonathan, on faculty at Frostburg State College in Maryland.

RAZZLE
DAZZLE
CHRISTMAS!
The Neosho County Community College
Foundation held a very successful fundraiser
on November 20th at the Ottawa
Country Club. The event “A Razzle Dazzle
Christmas” brought much attention to the
new campus being built directly across the
street from the Country Club. Lit up by
several powerful spot lights, it could be seen
from the Country Club and was a beautiful
sight on the cool crisp evening.
Over 70 residents of Ottawa put on their
very best outfits and came out to bid on
the decorated Christmas trees that were
auctioned off that evening. The trees were
auctioned off during the event and then
delivered and set-up for the purchasing
individuals. A silent auction was also held
with many of the items being donated by
NCCC Ottawa staff and local companies.
After the speeches and auction the music,
food and drink provided the background for
much camaraderie and dancing. All funds
from the event will provide scholarships
to students attending the NCCC Ottawa
Educational Facility.

The Neosho County Community College
Foundation Golf Classic took place this
year on April 28th at the Prairie Ridge Golf
Course in Erie, Kansas. With 18 teams
vying for the prize money and prizes. The
big winner was the Harold Turner Endowed
Scholarship for Men’s Basketball as this
year’s tournament brought in the funds
needed to finish endowing the scholarship
named in Mr. Turner’s honor. To endow a
scholarship at NCCC requires a donation
of $10,000 or more. The Harold Turner
Endowed Scholarship is now a reality and
in the Fall of 2012 will provide a $500
scholarship to its first recipient.
This year for the first time there were two
flights for the NCCC Foundation Golf

Mr. Mike Skidmore, Vice-President of
Garnett State Savings Bank was instrumental
in helping Neosho County Community
College receive a contribution from the
Goppert Foundation. The Goppet gift of
$100,000 to the Neosho County Community
College Foundation was used to help with the
new NCCC Ottawa Educational Facility. The
new 52,000 square foot facility built at 900 E
Logan in Ottawa houses the new Simulated
Hospital, the Teaching and Learning Center,
a 100 seat auditorium and new classrooms
and science labs.
The Goppert gift helped to build the
outdoor learning areas or plazas where
NCCC students can sit and relax, study,
converse, learn and debate. One of the
differences between high school and college
is the opportunity to come and go as
students want, being able to sit outside and
converse and having that signature place
to meet. The plazas at the Ottawa campus,
built with the Goppert gift, fulfill all of
those needs. Thank you to the Goppert
Foundation for this wonderful gift.
