Lancaster High School 2015-2016 English III – Syllabus Instructor: Mrs. Tamia Robertson E-mail: Tamiarobertson@lancasterisd.org Telephone: 972-218-1800, ext. 5162 Room #: C205 Description of Course: Students enrolled in English III will continue to increase and refine both verbal and written communication skills. Using available technology, high school students are expected to plan, draft, and complete written (computer-generated), error-free compositions for a variety of purposes. English III students will extensively read and analyze multiple genres from multi-ethnic world literature. This is a differentiated curriculum to better serve exceptional needs, and it provides opportunities for students to be self-directed on highly individualized learning experiences involving enrichment activities. Students enrolled in English I-IV will be required to write a research paper. (Course Selection Catalog; Grades 9-12) There will be required summer reading. All English III students will study the following units: Unit 01 – Touring American Literature Unit 02A – Analyzing the Elements of Poetry Unit 02B – Analysis of Drama Unit 03- Fiction and Literary Non-Fiction Unit 04 – Powerful Persuasion Unit 05A – Connecting Genres Unit 05B – College and Career Connections Unit 06 – Reliability, Validity, and Accuracy Instructional Resource - Literature: Texas Treasures, American Literature Grading Policy: (70% is the minimum passing grade) Daily Work DOL, Interactive notebooks, exit slips, oral participation, etc. Written Performance Opportunities tests, research paper, etc. 40% 40% Homework 20% Plagiarism is the undocumented and/or unauthorized use of another person’s work. Simply put, if you did not write it, draw it, compose it, design it, make it, or create it in any way – it is not yours to use without documenting the source. If you plagiarize, you will receive 0 points for that activity and may face additional disciplinary consequences. LHS’ policy on plagiarism is simple: Don’t do it! Cheating (copying homework, sharing answers during exams) will be handled in a like manner. Late/Makeup Work: Without prior approval from me, ten points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late. Assignments must be submitted within three days after the due date. (Saturday and Sunday are counted in the allowed three days.) Students who miss tests will be allowed to take an alternate exam for full credit (with an excused absence). Homework: Students may complete homework at least once per week. Homework may include outside reading assignments. Class Expectations: Students are expected to 1) Attend class and be on time. 2) Be prepared to learn and perform your best. 3) Be respectful at all times. 4) Address all teachers and peers appropriately. 5) Not use profanity. Personal Technology: Unless otherwise stated, all personal technology devices are prohibited in class to include cell phones, mobile music devices, headphones, etc. These devices will be confiscated and students may incur a $15 fine to retrieve their devices. Academic Language: We will speak (and write) professionally. As young adults in my class, you will be challenged to speak as such. We will speak (and write) in grammatically correct terms. Your ability to apply relevant vocabulary during your oral participation will be rewarded in your daily participation grades. Profanity is absolutely prohibited!
