Course Description – Using project based instruction students are introduced to the principles of business in the 21st
century while refreshing their keyboarding skills. This course should also help students to use computers effectively in
their lives, thus providing a connection of computer science and business careers.
In this course, middle school students build a knowledge base of computer applications, information systems, internet
safety, 21st century skills, and business and computer science careers of the 21st century.
Exposure to networking and programming will also be important threads in this course.
Competencies for the co-curricular student organization Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Middle Level
are integral components of the performance standards. FBLA activities should be incorporated throughout instructional
strategies developed for the course. Student membership dues to join Middle School FBLA is $25.00.
Course Objectives: (In accordance with Georgia Performance Standards)

MSBCS-BCSIII-2: The students will demonstrate effective communication skills used to

MSBCS-BCSIII-9: The students will examine basics of business law.
MSBCS-BCSIII-10: The students will examine basics of marketing.
MSBCS-BCSIII-11: The student will examine educational requirements, job
responsibilities, employment trends, and opportunities within different career pathways.
MSBCS-BCSIII-12: The student will demonstrate an understanding of economics.
MSBCS-BCSIII-13: The student will demonstrate an understanding of personal finance.

Work will be due on the assigned due date. Late work is penalized 5 percentage points for each day it is late. After 10
days, the highest grade that can be earned is a 50. Any assignment that is due and has not been received will be entered
in as a zero until it is received and graded. All work assigned up to the 45th day will need to be completed by the 55th day
of the semester to receive any credit. All work assigned in the second half of the semester must be turned in by the last
day of school to receive and credit.
Academic Honesty
Today’s technology has made the ability to share information and resources much easier than in the past. Do not allow
yourself to use this as a temptation to cheat. Your grade should reflect what you have truly learned, not what you could
acquire from others. Anyone caught cheating will immediately lose final exam exemption privileges!
Absences
A calendar of our daily activities and assignments will be posted on the Web. When absent, you are expected to check the
calendar to see what was missed. For policies concerning make-up work for absences, refer to your Student Handbook.
An automatic final grade of 69 will be given if absent from this class more than 4 days.
Other Items of Importance
 No computer games, videos, or inappropriate web sites!

No food or drinks allowed in the lab unless it is associated with a class assignment.

All students must be in appropriate dress to enter the class room. Please refer to the student handbook for information
regarding dress code. This includes your Student ID. There will be NO HOODED jackets allowed in the classroom.

You are expected to monitor your grades and progress through bi-weekly progress reports. These are to be signed by
your parent or guardian and turned in the following Monday.

You are expected to know and abide by the rules set forth in the Student Handbook.

You are strongly encouraged to record assignments on a daily basis.

Have your student handbook with you each day. You cannot leave the class without it!

Be prepared for class! Be in your seat and ready to go when the bell rings and have all necessary materials as listed on
page one of this syllabus.

I understand the need to respond to "mother nature" but excessive requests to leave the room will not be approved. No
passes will be granted in the first 20 and last 20 minutes of the class period.

Remember that this is a learning environment. I understand that you may make mistakes, but I also expect you to own
up to them and accept consequences for your actions.

Remember the three R's: respect for yourself, respect for others, and responsibility for your actions.


This syllabus should be considered a work in progress. Any changes made to the syllabus will be given to each student in
writing in a timely manner.
