From the Word… “Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. The LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.” Psalm 85:8-13 Please note: - the correct address for E-Life submissions is: communications@anglicanlife.org.nz - E-Life is sent from a “no-reply” address and replies are not received. Anglican News & Events – 6 August 2014 At the recent clergy conference we committed to pray for the fulfilment of God’s will for ChristChurch Cathedral and we ask clergy and laity of this Diocese and further afield to simply pause and pray at noon each day that God’s will might be done to resolve the issues surrounding the Cathedral building in the Square. Please feel encouraged to share this prayer request with Christian friends across the world. The Hospital has suffered damage, but most importantly they need donations to enable emergency medical supplies, food, and fuel for the generators to be purchased. Anglican Missions has launched an emergency appeal to assist the Al-Ahli Hospital. To find out how to donate, visit the Anglican Missions website: http://www.angmissions.org.nz/?sid=296 2 Peace Sunday Resources for WWI and Gaza Christian World Service is asking churches to pray for peace this Sunday and to support the Gaza Emergency Appeal. CWS has prepared worship resources “And the Hour is Now Late” to fit with Sunday’s lectionary readings and remember the beginning of World War I, the dropping of the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and the desperate need for peace in Gaza and Israel. CWS is appealing for donations to help meet some of the desperate need in Gaza. Funds raised will enable CWS partner Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR) to provide US$100 emergency grants to families in need of food, water, fuel or other help. They will fund the extension of the psychosocial programmes for children and mothers and four vocational training centres helping young people gain practical skills. The appeal will also fund three maternal health clinics providing medical services primarily to mothers and young children. Peace Sunday is held on the Sunday closest to Hiroshima Day, 6 August. It is a time when New Zealand churches remember the harm done by nuclear bombs and testing, and recommit themselves to working for peace. This Sunday is the closest to the day that New Zealand signalled its support to the British declaration of war on Germany one hundred years ago on August 4, 1914. It is a day to remember those who lost their lives in this long conflict and recommit to peace. Donations to the Gaza Appeal can be made: on line at www.cws.org.nz/donate, sent to PO Box 22652, Christchurch 8140 or by calling 0800 74 73 72. 3 Child Poverty dvd and Petition Please find below a link to the Rt Hon John Key’s: Create a national strategy to reduce child poverty, including poverty measures, targets, and a commitment to report on progress. http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/rt-hon-john-key-create-a-national-strategy-toreduce-child-poverty-including-poverty-measures-targets-and-a-commitment-to-report-onprogress?recruiter=16108939&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_s ource=share_petition The link also provides an opportunity to sign a petition if you are interested. 4 Mid Winter Spirited Conversation - tonight August 6, 7pm Petersgate Lounge Cnr Yaldhurst and Curletts Road “Living with Grief Sharing our Stories” Speaker, readings, film clips, karakia, discussion, reflections, hot tips Hot mulled wine and black currant drinks. Applications are invited for the full-time position of Vicar to the Mission District of St Stephen’s, Tamahere. St Stephen’s is conveniently located between Cambridge and Hamilton, but is a church in a rural park-like setting. The church hosts a thriving monthly Country Market Day, enjoys close relationships with local schools and the retirement village, and extends ministry to the church of St David’s, Matangi. The enduring and much-loved Christmas Festival is a highlight of the parish calendar. Worship has been offered on the site of St Stephen’s for nearly 150 years, but the existing church buildings date from the 1970s, with alterations made in 2003. The result is a plant that serves the congregation well, with an integrated crèche that keeps children connected with worship. There is one main Sunday morning service, with ministries tailored for groups offered regularly: men’s and women’s fellowships, Tots and Tunes, and an annual Light Party. St Stephen’s is a mission district in more than name: the church is diligent in tithing proceeds from market days, supporting the work of Anglican Action and a number of other charities. The new Vicar at St Stephen’s will be blessed by a welcoming, inclusive church family full of potential to respond to those in need. This enthusiastic parish will welcome a pastoral teamplayer, and looks for leadership to develop youth ministry, worship, and community outreach.
