MILITARISM ALLIANCES IMPERIALISM NATIONALISM Militarism: policy of building up strong armed forces to prepare for war - European nations expanded armies/ navies An Example: Germany built its navy, Britain responded by adding more ships to its fleet = race for naval dominance strained relations between the two Alliances: agreement, support or friendship between two or more countries or parties European powers formed rival alliances to protect themselves – Germany organized the Triple Alliance with Austria Hungary & Italy – France responded by linking itself to Russia & Britain: Triple Entente France Germany AustriaHungary Italy Russia Britain Imperialism - Britain, France, Russia, Germany & Italy scrambled for colonies in Africa, Asia & the Pacific - SPAM taught us that the U.S. was now a new Imperial force to be reckoned with!
