Wilmington University Pathwise Lesson Plan Format Teacher/Student Teacher Grade: Subject: Date: Ms. Katie Todd 3rd Grade Math (Program is also available from other subjects) March 1, 2010 1. Briefly describe the students in this class. The class profile consists of 26 third grade students. Ages range between 7-8 years old. Students will be working in pairs for this lesson, randomly assigned by the teacher. 2. What are your goals for the lesson? What do you want the students to learn? Students will learn to use the internet to answer research based questions provided by the teacher.scholastic.com. Using the information provided by their research, students will have to do addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages and averages to answer the questions. The program keeps score of the correct answers and is able to be printed at the complete of the assignment. Students will work in pairs to help research and answer questions. 3. Why are these goals suitable for this group of students? While researching, students will strengthen their fine motor skills while using the computer to complete this activity. Students will also rely on previous knowledge of their math skills to calculate correct answers. Students will use many different skills while completing their questions including, motor skills, thinking skills, research ability and application of information. 4. How do these goals support the district’s curriculum, state frameworks, and/or content standards? Math Standard 2.2: Model situations that involve the addition, subtraction, and multiplication of whole numbers using objects, pictures, symbols, and geometric models. Students will use these procedures to answer questions after researching the proper information for the problems. Language Arts Standard 2.4: Demonstrate overall understanding of printed texts by making predictions as necessary. Students will interrupt information from internet research to answer math questions. 5. How do these goals relate to broader curriculum goals in the discipline as a whole or in other disciplines? Students will learn how to interrupt data and apply information for practical use. Developing these abilities will lead to further enhancement in more difficult research for other curriculums. 6. How do you plan to engage students in the content? What will you do? What will the students do? (30 minutes allotted). Describe the steps or components of a lesson that are a part of this lesson. Possible steps or components are listed below: Mindset or “Warm-Up” Activity (5 minutes) o Using a Smartboard, the teacher will review and ask questions about using the internet. The review will consist of class discussion about appropriate websites, URL location, clicking on links. The teacher will use volunteers to help demonstrate. State objective or purpose of the lesson o Student will interrupt information they found from a provided webpage and apply it to a math question. o Learning how to evaluate and research proper web pages will help students throughout their educational career. Students will need to distinguish reliable information to write formal papers during high school and college. Provide Instructional Input o Students will be relying on previous taught information tom complete this assignment. They will recall correct computer skills, research strategies and application of math techniques to complete this assignment properly. o The warm-up activity will consist of lecture, review and class discussion, while the main part of the lesson (working with a partner on the computer) will consist of application of the internet and mathematical skills. Model (5 minutes) o After the warm-up activity, the teacher will divide the students into pairs and assign them to a computer. Next, she will provide steps to access the correct URL for the activity (http://teacher.scholastic.com/mathhunt/). Students will then be able to pick an area of topic they find interesting; topics including Science, Social Studies or Finance. After explanation of the activity, the teacher will walk around the room to make sure each student is accessing the correct website and participating properly with their partner. o Using Smartboard, the teacher will demonstrate the proper steps for each web page they should be accessing to finally reach the desired activity page. Check for understanding o While properly demonstrating proper internet use, the teacher will ask many questions to check for understanding. Where do we type the URL address? If the proper address does not appear, what should we check first? o Once students are all on the proper webpage and working together to select an area of interest, the teacher will know that students understand the activity. The teacher will walk around the classroom to check for understanding. Guided Practice (20 minutes total; 10 for each activity) o Students will answer the questions provided by the website as a guided practice to check for understanding of their internet research skills and knowledge. Students will be able to print out their scores at the complete of the activity. Although students will be working in pairs, they will complete two different activities to turn in, one for each student. They are allowed to help each other answer the questions. Closure Activity o The teacher will conduct a class discussion about the web activities. Other activities are available within this webpage. The teacher can ask whether students liked using this program and if they would like to use it again for a different subject. 7. What difficulties do students typically experience in this area, and how do you plan to anticipate these difficulties? Students may have difficulty troubleshooting using the internet; therefore the teacher must be available during the entire lesson. 8. What instructional materials or other resources, if any, will you use? List all equipment and materials needed. Include: Smartboard equipped classroom Minimum of 13 computers in the classroom Printer 9. How did you plan to assess student achievement of the goals? What procedures will you use? (Attached any tests or performance tasks, with accompanying scoring guides or rubrics.) Students must work together as a team to complete this activity which will count as participation points. Students will also print out their score for the activity. The teacher will also watch students for proper use of the internet. Participation, cooperation, on-task activity and print out of the graded activity will all be evaluated for this lesson. 10. How do you plan to use the results of the assessment? This lesson will be utilized more as a review and check for understanding for application of the internet rather than teaching of new information. Students should be able to complete this task on time and properly. If students do need more time or help, extra help by the teacher will be available during the class. Students will also have the resource of their partner to help with the extra help they may need. After complete understanding of this project, students will be able to move onto more difficult internet research; using search engines and metacrawlers to find web pages, rather than provided web pages in the activity.
