SMARTBoard Lesson Plan
Topic/ Lesson Title: Sequence of Events
Unit of Study: Story Comprehension
Content/ Grade Focus: Language Arts, 6th grade
Time Frame: 60 min.
Technology Standards/ Objectives Addressed: 1.1.a - Show that new products and systems can
be developed to solve problems or to help do things that could not be done without the help of
technology.
Content Standards/ Objectives Addressed: 2.3.a - Identify and analyze the organizational
patterns of texts such as sequential and/or chronological order, description, main idea and
supporting details, transition or signal words and phrases that indicate the organizational
pattern.
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify time-order words in order to comprehend
passages, use a flow chart to organize their thoughts for writing, and place events in sequential
order on a time line.
Materials and Resources: Pencils, paper, SMARTBoard lesson: Reviewing Sequence of Events
Lesson Procedure:
1. As a warm-up have the student’s think of their favorite story and briefly write what
happened in the beginning, middle, and the end.

2. Start the SMARTBoard lesson plan and review the objectives, on the third slide stop and
have several students come up and write the beginning, middle and the end of their favorite
story from the warm-up on the SMARTBoard.
3. Continue with the SMARTBoard lesson and have the students read the passage “Leif
Ericson’s Journey” to their self.
4. After everyone has finished reading, have several students come up and underline timeorder words in the passage.
5. Have a several students come up one at a time to fill in the flow chart with the correct order
of main events in the passage. After the chart is complete read over the chart.
6. Discuss transition or order words that we used to fill out the flow chart. Discuss other words
that we can use when describing a sequence of events.
7. Call on other students to come up to the SMARTBoard and put the different events from
“Leif Ericson’s Journey” in order on the time line by touching the event and dragging it to where
it belongs.
8. Have students read the next passage silently to themselves.
9. Have several students come up one at a time and put the events in sequential order by
putting a number in the blank.
Assessment: Have students read a longer story in their reading text book titled, Climb or Die on
pages 74 -86. After reading, have students independently write a paragraph discussing the

main events in chronological order as they happened in the story. Remind students to use 3-5
time-order words in their paragraph. This will be collected and graded.
Closure: As closure, call on one student at a time and have each student tell one thing that we
did in class in the order in which it happened. Have the first selected student tell the first thing
we did in class, the second student to tell the next activity we did and so on.
