Dear Parent/ Guardian:
I will be your child’s teacher this year in Health Science 1 Class. This course is designed to introduce the student to
various health careers, safety, and personal qualities of a health care worker, cultural diversity, medical
terminology, body systems, and other related topics. The medical terminology portion of this course is designed to
help the student gain knowledge of medical terms by studying prefixes, suffixes, and root words. We will then
take these words and relate them to the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Computer software, video
tapes, lab equipment, scenarios, and visual aids will be used to facilitate the learning process. Guest speakers will
provide the student with a better understanding of the health care industry. Some independent, as well as group
or partner studying will be necessary.
It is important that we operate and behave in the classroom in a manner where we are all respected and have a
fair opportunity to leatrn. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Please review the course syllabi, cell phone
policy, and the classroom rules with our student. These rules have been reviewed and signed by your student
indicating that they have a clear understanding and will abide by them. I also ask that you reinforce the rules as
well.
Please note that the attendance policy will be strictly adhered to. Excessive absences will hinder learning in this
class due to the amount of material covered. Students must have an excused absence/tardy in order to make up
any missed assignments. Calls may be made to verify excuses. Please see student handbook for more information
on the attendance and tardy policies. Credit may be denied for excessive absences.
The materials needed for this class are listed below. Students will need all materials every day.
 Paper/notebook for notes and 100 page composition notebook
 Writing materials (blue or black pen and/or pencil)
 100+ index cards (preferably on a spiral)
 Poster board (as requested)
 $5.00 course fee (required for all A5CC students)
