Quiz on people and terms from Ch. 18 and 19 Before WWII Italy--Mussolini • Fascist dictator – who put an end to democracy – Totalitarian government—controlled all aspects of Italian life---books, radio, movies, etc. – Used brutal tactics to ensure Italians voted for him. – Called Il Duce –The Leader – Banned non fascist parties – Built up armed forces – Fascists murdered, attacked any who did not follow their policies Why he came into power? • Economy deteriorated following WWI • Price of bread rose • Coal shortage—hampered industrial production. • Unrest spread through Italy • Middle and upper class feared communist revolution. • Video clip of Mussolini –5-6 minutes • Take additional notes as you watch The Weimar Republic • After WWI, Germany was hurting economically, politically, and socially. • In 1919, the Weimar Republic was established. – Assembly drafted a new constitution. – Political instability and violence erupted. – Some German citizens were upset because the leaders of the Weimar Republic accepted the terms to the Treaty of Versailles. • Germans were to pay reparations of $35 billion. • Germany could not pay France, so French troops marched in to the Ruhr Valley and took control of coal mines and steel mills. • Government printed more and more money…making money worth less. • U.S. set up the Dawes plan to help Germany…French leave Ruhr Valley. Rise of Nazism • National Socialist Workers’ party = NAZI • Adolf Hitler – Born in Austria, 1889 – Formed the Brownshirts to seize power of the government. – Hitler was arrested for starting trouble…while in jail he wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle). • Germans were not at fault for losing the Great War, but should blame Jews and communists. • He declared Germans were the master race. • Saw himself as the leader that would unite all German speaking people into a new empire. – Once released from jail…1929—Great Depression…he appealed to German citizens. – 1930s Nazis won a large number of seats in Reichstag—lower house. – 1933, he became Chancellor of Germany. – The Nazis had come to power. • Adolf Hitler – (6 minutes) – Please take additional notes as you watch.
