Mr. Farenholtz is available for brief questions on Day 1’s. Expectations 1) Full attendance: You cannot afford to miss a single class of Physics 11. Very few people can learn the concepts of Physics 11 on their own. Based on experience, your final mark will drop about 1.5% for every class missed if you do not work hard to make up for the lost time. 2) Focus: You must make time for physics in your life. Many students are involved in non-academic activities, such as work, grad, or sports. To be successful in Physics 11 it is important that you budget your time carefully during the time you are studying this course, particularly before the final. 3) Deal with Problems Immediately: If you don’t understand something, ask a question right away. There are probably others in the class hoping you’ll ask a question! If you still don’t understand, ask another student or your teacher for help. 4) Lateness Policies: Tardiness is disrespectful to everyone else in the class and you are wasting valuable in-class time. If you are late, sign in, and sit down and get to work. 5) Electronics/Food/Drink– No electronic devices are permitted in class except your calculator (and translators for international students) – keep them switched off and in your backpack or locker. Phones will be confiscated immediately and kept until the end of the day or you have the option of paying $1.00 to get it back by the end of the class. No phones for calculator use. 6) Assignments and Test Questions: On questions involving the solution to a problem or the explanation of a statement, part marks will be awarded for showing your work – method, process, calculations, demonstration of your reasoning. Full marks will not be awarded for an answer only. Also, marks are lost for the use of incorrect units or for no indication of units where applicable. 7) If You Get Sick: Call or text your classmates to find out what homework assignments or notes were missed. You will have to do any labs and quizzes missed when you return. Physics 11 is a fast moving course, be prepared to work hard to catch up when you return. What to Expect 1. Study Guide: This is a package of information and work that needs to be completed for each unit. It will guide your studies, includes practice problems and indicates when to expect labs and quizzes. This can be worked on at any time in class. 2. Lessons: Teacher-directed lessons will occur within the class time. If the teacher is not directly teaching then it is time to work on one of your many assignments. You will need to be self-directed and make your own decisions on what you are going to focus on. 3. Summative Tests/Labs: Are given at the end of the unit. They are done on the computer and include images, video, and simulations. You may re-write your quizzes, summative tests or labs once. If you choose to rewrite then the rewrite score is taken as the test mark and your first attempt is still entered as a formative mark. 4. Due dates-On labs and assignments are there to aid you in time management. Assignments are given to show that you are practicing and able to complete the work. If assignments are not completed then you have not practiced for quizzes or tests. All course work is due on the day of the summative. Absolutely no assignments will be accepted after the summative test.
