I am very excited to be one of your student’s teachers this year at MRHS! I am looking forward to having a great year with you and your student. Should you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, I encourage you to contact me via e-mail (the best option) or at the school. It may also be necessary for me to contact you regarding the progress or performance of your student throughout the school year which I will do either by e-mail or telephone. I would like to explain at this time my policies concerning communication between home and school, student success, and the use of a second language in my classroom. Communication between Home & School Class Website In order to provide you with a glimpse into our daily life at school I have created a class website. The address for this website is: tinyurl.com/mrhs216. On this site you will be able to discover what is for homework, read important school announcements and at a later date, download copies of handouts that were given in class. Absences Absences are often unavoidable but students must take responsibility for determining what they have missed while away. Students have been encouraged to select a “homework buddy” who will take notes for them when they are absent. Carbon paper is available for students to use when copying notes for absent students. Students are also required to check the missed work folder upon their arrival back to class for handouts or returned assignments. During an absence, students may also check the class website to keep themselves informed on class progress. Students will be allotted an adequate time frame upon their return to complete any missed work without penalty. Extended Absences Students who are absent for extended periods of time due to external sports commitments, family vacations, etc. will not be provided with work ahead of time. Parents and students are encouraged to discuss with me any concerns they may have before a student’s extended absence. A folder of missed work will be maintained for the student during their absence (their homework buddy may also place their class notes in this folder) and upon their return, students will be required to meet with me to determine a schedule of completion for all missed work. Student Success Schoolwork Students will be given ample notice of due dates for assignments/projects. I expect all assignments/projects to be handed in at the beginning of class on the due date. If a student experiences difficulty in meeting a deadline due to unforeseen circumstances, they should speak with me as soon as possible to work out alternate arrangements. Speaking with me the day the assignment/project is due is not acceptable. All schoolwork must be completed to the best of the student’s ability and the quality of work must reflect their level of ability as well. Messy work, hastily completed work or work completed at a level below that which the student is capable of achieving may be returned to the student for re-completion before I will assess the work. Late Work Students must complete all assignments and projects. Late assignments and projects (or those which a student refuses to complete) may result in recess and/or lunch detentions, phone calls home, office referrals or in-school suspensions. Extra Help I offer extra-help to any student who is experiencing difficulty in any of my courses and who is trying their best during class time. Extra-help is offered by appointment only! Students must see me at least one day in advance to schedule an appointment. When attending an extra help session, students must come prepared to work. They must have specific questions to ask; saying, “I don’t get any of it” is not acceptable. Thank you so much for having taken the time to help ensure that your student will have a successful school year! Ms Suzanne Height
