FCC Environment’s Oxfordshire MRF opens
for business
Leading recycling and waste management commpany, FCC Environment has opened the
doors of its new £ 11million materials recovery facility (MRF) at its Sutton Courtenay site in
Oxfordshire.
The MRF will treat non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste collected from
businesses in the county, separate out recyclables such as glass, paper, metals and plastics
with the residual fraction being sent off site for energy recovery in the form of a refuse
derived fuel. It can also process source segregated materials in preparation for their
recycling into new raw materials.
The new plant complements other treatment facilities FCC Environment has developed in
the last year at Costessey, Norfolk; Bletchley, Buckinghamshire; Arpley, Merseyside and
Alfreton, Derbyshire, as part of the company’s desire to build a significant business waste
collection and recycling operation.
The Sutton Courtenay MRF has the capacity to process 100,000 tonnes of waste per annum
and will provide up to 38 jobs, bringing the total number of FCC Environment employees at
Sutton Courtenay to around 55.
Paul Dumpleton, Head of Regional Development at FCC Environment said: “The business
model for FCC Environment has been to develop modern waste processing infrastructure to
ensure we can offer our business customers methods of extracting value from their waste
and diverting as much material from landfill as possible.
“The Sutton Courtenay MRF is the next piece in this infrastructure jigsaw and will enable us
to provide top class services in the Oxfordshire area.”
The MRF is housed within a 4,500 sq m building and includes a further 7,000 sq m of
external concrete hardstanding. The building was constructed by Jones Brothers Ruthin
(Civil Engineering) Co Ltd with the internal MRF separation equipment being supplied by CP
Group.
Under the current planning permission the landfill site is required to be completed by 2030,
with full restoration by 2036. FCC Environment is committed to restoring the landfill to
agricultural use, and the development of the new MRF forms an important part of the
Company’s long-term strategy to ensure the landfill’s timely and sustainable completion.
