Speech 1 The Informative Speech
This round of speeches will take place on ____________________
Please sign up on the bulletin board in the back of the classroom.
Remember to consider any scheduling conflicts such as college visits,
doctor’s appointments, sports, etc.
Your objective is to create a powerful informative speech that will
inform your audience about your topic. See page 337 in your textbook
for a list of the types of informative speeches that describe, explain, or
report.
You will be graded on:
1. Oral delivery (50 points)
2. Presentation outline including Works Cited (25 points)
3. Delivery outline (25 points)
The time requirement for this speech is 5 - 7 minutes. You are not to
exceed seven minutes, however, there will be a 10 second grace period
before points will be deducted.
You are required to have a minimum of four sources. Wikipedia does
not count as one of your required sources, though you can use it. Feel
free to use more sources if necessary. Be sure to use both written
citations in your outline and oral citations in your speech.
It is important that you follow the creative process.

Identify your general purpose and audience.
Create an idea bank. (brainstorming)
Select topic.
Narrow your topic by identifying your specific purpose.
(GP + Audience + Objective)
Is this a speech to inform, describe, explain, etc. (see page 337).
Create your central idea. This is like a well-written thesis.
Construct a working outline. (brief, handwritten sketch of what is
established so far and working main points)
Locate supporting materials Take excellent notes and cite sources.
Use notecards if you choose.
Prepare preparation outline including citations.
10.Prepare your Works Cited page using MLA format.
11.Finish your preparation outline several days before your speech
day so that the final days can be spent practicing!
12.Prepare delivery outline on notecards. Include keywords, phrases,
and delivery cues.
13.Create effective presentation aid (if using one).
14.Practice delivering your speech as much as you can! (*This step is
especially important so that you can make sure your speech is within
the time requirement.)
