What is the present progressive
Present progressive is used to say what is
happening right now.
 It is made up of 2 verbs:


Estar + another verb in the present participle
form.
Forming the present progressive
Start with a form of the verb estar:
estoy
estamos
estás
estáis
está
están
 Use another verb (for what is being done)
and put it in the present participle:


For AR verbs, drop the AR & add –ando

For IR/ER verbs, drop IR or ER & add -iendo
Ejemplos…

I am running

First, start with a form of estar.
 ESTOY

Then, use the verb ‘correr’ and put it in the
present participle
 CORRER

 CORR  CORRIENDO
ESTOY CORRIENDO
¿Como se dice…?

You are talking. (hablar)


We are eating. (comer)

Irregular progessive endings…

RULE #1

When the stem of either an -IR or -ER verb ends
in a vowel (leer), you will change the “i” (of –
iendo) to a y
 “Estoy
leyendo”, not “estoy leiendo”.
Irregular verbs…

RULE #2
Some IR vebs have stem changes in the present
tense. Dormir = duermo
 For verbs like these, a stem change also
happens in the present progressive.
O  U
E  I

 durmiendo (sleeping)
 Servir  sirviendo (serving)
 Dormir
Other things to know…

Do not use “ir” or “venir” with present
progressive.
Yo vengo a la fiesta = I’m coming to the party.
