Its purpose is to define the core responsibilities of the person
undertaking this role, and those deputising in his/her absence. The
detail of those responsibilities will be found within the company’s
quality manual and other published policies. The duties and
responsibilities of the Operations Manager will develop and grow as
the company changes to meet the demands of its customers. Job
descriptions will be reviewed formally each year within the appraisal
process.
Key Objectives
1. To manage the short and medium term operational aspects
within the assigned departments, ensuring maximum profitability
and optimal quality, in a legal and safe working environment.
2. Take overall responsibility for the day to day operational aspects
of the site and process post harvest.
3. Operate within the financial constraints of the budget.
4. To promote a lean culture and process throughout the
Operation. Demonstrating continuous improvement of Quality
safety and cost against a balanced set of metrics.
Responsibilities
Management - ensure operational staff are employed in a timely
manner with appropriate skills to enable you to successfully
undertake your responsibilities. That at all time staff are aware of
their roles and responsibilities they hold within the company and
understand their contribution to the company objectives.
Manage staff in accordance with company policy
Costs - you are responsible for the financial performance of your
departments. All capital expenditure purchases, as well as
maintenance purchases in excess of £500 must be authorised by
the Head of Operations.

MHE / Equipment - you will have overall responsibility for the MHE
and all other equipment within your assigned business area.
Areas - you are responsible for all areas of the manufacturing/post
harvest site.
Development - to play an active role in the development of both
your department and the company as a whole. When opportunities
for improvement are identified, you must consider there potential
fully and then discuss and assist the H of O&SCD with any agreed
implementation.
Operational tasks
You are responsible for the following:
Production - for ensuring that all goods are produced in
accordance with the requirements of our customers, our company
policies and any current legislation. Goods must be produced in a
timely manner to allow for delivery at the correct time.
Quality - to ensure that the operation team packs to the quality
specifications laid down by each customer and work with the quality
team to achieve optimum pack out on each production run.
Warehouse - for ensuring that both the day and night shifts meet
all customer delivery targets and in picking all products adhere to
the system disciplines and QMS policies.
Equipment- working alongside Site/Services/Maintenance to
ensure that all equipment utilised within your area is maintained
and all associated documentation is completed.
Administration - ensuring that all paperwork, record keeping,
purchase order and goods received information, and any other
information that relates to this area is produced accurately in a
timely manner
Conditioning/Ripening - to ensure that the conditioning/ripening
department operates in the most efficient manner using the facilities
and technology available. You are to ensure that the team
maximizes yield taking into account product variability and seasonal
challenges enabling us to meet customer specifications.
Reporting – working with the H of O&SCD play an active role in
implementing/maintaining KPI’s across each of your departments
and in conjunction with the Section Manager use them to help gain
efficiencies within each relative area.

Health & Safety - implement the Company Health & Safety Policy
within your areas. You should be aware of your own responsibilities
for health and safety and that of your subordinates. The needs of
production should never override considerations of health and
safety, which should be an intrinsic part of everyday activities in the
areas for which you are responsible.
Hygiene - ensure that all activities and areas for which you are
responsible comply with the Company Hygiene Policy.
Other
You must perform all other duties as required, consistent with your
training and experience.
Summary
In laying down the responsibilities for this position, the company
accepts that from time to time difficulties will occur which may be
outside the scope of your competence. In such situations, you
should always refer the matter to your immediate superior, so that
he/she may provide assistance to help you resolve the matter.
In particularly difficult cases your superior may agree to deal with
the matter for you. However, your responsibilities remain in place
until such time as your superior has accepted the responsibility
from you.

To have experience at a similar level in a production environment with proven
excellent management experience/skills
Ability to work with HR to maintain, develop and enhance staff skills
To have worked within the Fresh Produce Industry
To be able to demonstrate a proactive and flexible “can do approach” to work
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
To have experience or working to and reviewing own department budgets
To have a good level of analytical and PC skills, i.e. Excel, Work, Outlook
To have a good understanding of Health & Safety and ability to manage Health &
Safety within the Company
Possess an understanding or have experience of working/utilizing Lean
manufacturing principles.
Familiar with BRC/BOP & TPPS (Tesco audit)
Ability to report performance information as required.
