Wordle Cheat Sheet
Wordle is a free online application that uses Java script to generate a word cloud image. Words which occur
more frequently will be larger than others. Common words like ‘the’ and ‘and’ will be filtered out unless you
specifically include them. You can alter the font, layout, and color scheme and re-generate the image as often as
you like. You may then publish onto the Web or you can save a screenshot and crop to the desired size. See how
to use Wordle below.
1. Go to wordle.net. Click on Create.
2. Paste or key in some text and click Go.
a. Repeat words that you feel are more interesting or important. They will become the larger words
in your wordle.
b. Use a ~ between words in a phrase that you would like to keep together.
c. You can also enter webpage URLs.
3. Ways to edit your Wordle:
a. Edit lets you undo or redo wordle layouts.
b. Language lets you change lettering between lower- and uppercase, and to choose not to remove
common words, including words from other languages.
c. Font allows you to change the type style.
d. Layout lets you choose the general direction of words, to round out the overall shape, to layout
roughly in alphabetical order, and to refresh the same layout settings until you get the desired
effect.
e. Color lets you change the colors of the background and the words using pre-set color schemes.
4. Ways to use your Wordle:
a. Print it immediately.
b. Select Open in Window.
i. This opens a pop-up window of just the graphic which you can expand to get a much
bigger image (or to get a good screenshot).
c. Use the screenshot feature:
i. Select the Print Screen button on your keyboard (Prtsc, toward the top, next to the
function and number keys).
ii. Right-click and select paste in a Word, Paint, or Publisher document.
iii. From there, you can crop what parts of the picture you would like by using the Crop
utility on the Picture toolbar (View, Toolbars, Picture Toolbar).
d. Save to gallery:
i. Click this button to publish your wordle to the Internet. Once you do this, you will get a
URL where you can find your wordle.
Other Tips for Wordle:
 Anyone can access the Gallery so some content may not be completely appropriate.
 You should acknowledge the Website as a caption or footer in your Wordles.
