The fair brings together the world’s most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics in celebration of design culture and commerce. It is in this spirit that the Miami Design District has embarked on several projects outside of the 18-block neighborhood that honor the influence of the fair: Miami Design District presents a retrospective on Zaha Hadid, inaugural Designer of the Year recipient at Design Miami/; Konstanin Grcic, the sixth Designer of the Year recipient has been commissioned to create a interactive design piece for the Perez Art Museum Miami, Nestcape, originally realized for Design Miami/ 2010; and the prototype of Buckminster Fuller’s 24ft - Fly’s Eye Dome, which was originally presented as a Design Satellite for Design Miami/, is also on view at the Perez Art Museum Miami. Each iteration of Bentley Elements will see an original commission from a craftsperson or artist representing a variety of disciplines including art, design and technology whose individual practices and techniques celebrate the diverse aspects of the Bentley brand. Campbell-Rey chose Light as the first element to be explored in the series, taking inspiration from the vehicle audit bays, neon-lit inspection areas where all cars are carefully inspected prior to delivery. To interpret their vision, Bentley commissioned Massimo Uberti, an Italian conceptual artist based in Milan, renowned for his sculptural light installations whose striking geometric structures suggest gravity and reality-defying 3D forms. At the core of his practice lies the desire to reduce the process to its essential components and to present light in its purest form. 25 NE 39th Street Bridge 3 BRIDGE TH E BOU N DARIES BET WEEN ART & DESIGN Every form of art and design is the result of exploring ideas and theories through graphic and visual means. This pop-up exhibition will take place in the heart of the Miami Design District, kicking off Miami Art Week 2014. The artist will be present for the opening, which coincides with the release of his first published catalog. Gentle, almost delicate portraits of young men are a parade of characters that Knight continuously inhabits in metaphor; physical manifestations of the full array of the artist’s internal psychological tones. Knight draws both technical and contextual elements from the Late Baroque and Rococo movements. His portraits of fragile youths are charged with sexual tension, completely self-aware, but fiercely guarded. Knight exerts a firm command over painting, drawing and drafting methodologies in his paintings, and capably carries his subjects from the past into the present. He creates, in effect, avatars of himself: a highly ornate cloak masking his inner self. Gucci began its collaboration with Knight in January 2014, when creative director Frida Giannini referenced Knight’s paintings as inspiration for Gucci’s Fall-Winter 2014 Collection. This exhibition has been made possible with the generous support of Gucci. New Wave, which originated in London in the late 70’s; New Beat, created in Belgium in the mid 80’s; and Electronic, with looks exuding a strong sense of identity, a mix of black and fluorescent highlights. Kris Van Assche, creative director of Dior Homme, has interpreted these stylistic influences in a spirit of elegance and modernity. The fluorescence is reflected in satin piping, in emphasizing the top-stitched pockets and in becoming embroidery. Radio frequency bands playfully draw modulating lines on shirts and t-shirts, while a graphic print gives rhythm to the silhouette. The palette of blacks, blues, and greys is lit up by white, technical green, yellow, blue, and bright red. The silhouette suggests new trouser and shirt sleeve lengths, with slightly cropped jackets and blousons. The look is dynamic and bold, with luxury and modernity echoing the same beat. 161 NE 40th Street 9 CH R I STIAN LO U B O UTI N The women’s boutique is designed by architects 212box. The “box” that holds the shopping area creates an intimate space for shoes to be purchased. The store is an interactive shopping exhibition where visitors change roles from patron to voyeur to shopper as they travel from the gallery to the retail center. 155 NE 40th Street, Suite 101 Chrome Hearts 13 EM I LIO PUCCI The dynamic spirit of the Design District and nearby South Beach is evident in the look and feel of the space, which marries cool neutrality with a celebration of color. Designed by British architect and designer Nigel Coates in collaboration with Barnaba Fornasetti, it constitutes an important addition to the Fornasetti oeuvre. This is their latest adventure in working together; in 2002 they collaborated on the ‘Tete à Tete’ collection of lamps, vases and tableware. The shape of this exclusive armchair suggests a welcoming hand, while a small table teeters on one armrest. The seat contains a double-sided cushion in jacquard fabric, featuring the front and back of the lower torso. Both the cushion and table are decorated with one of the many anthropomorphic variations that are key to Fornasetti. On the occasion of Fuorisalone week this chair was featured at Milanese Museum Bagatti Valsecchi in the acclaimed exhibition “Untold”, curated by gallerist Rossana Orlandi. Hermès 16 53 NE 40th Street H ER M È S SI LK ART 15 G I O RG I O AR MAN I The world of Giorgio Armani is, as always, unexpected; one that continuously rewrites its codes, gives a new soul to its colors and updates silhouettes by establishing a different equilibrium. Everything seems rebuilt – the forms and proportions of jackets, shorts that appear to be small skirts, and trousers that taper and are paired with uniform-like jackets with simple lines, made from double-sided fabrics. The collection offers a new way of experiencing monochromatic fabrics – wool, double washed silk, technical cady silk and lined georgette – that possess a naturalness devoid of any exoticim. Small silver and bronze reflections found on clothing and accessories illuminate the range of greige, powder grey, blue, white and copper colours. 174 NE 39th Street Hermès contributing silk artist, Nicolas Buffe developed a fascination for Japanese culture – its manga cartoons, comic strips and video games – at an early age. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he has lived in Tokyo since 2007, where his work explores a mix of Japanese Pop and traditional imagery. This young French artist presents a unique but characteristic composition; a clever mix of ancient forms and contemporary imagery. Serio Ludere: ‘to play seriously’ was a precept dear to the humanist authors of the Renaissance. Serious matters were to be tackled with a light-hearted, playful touch – a wise approach saluting the need to stand back and see things in perspective, with a pinch of humor and imagination. Bernini, the 18th-century sculptor and archetype of Roman Baroque, perched his obelisk on the Piazza della Minerva on the back of an elephant. His inspiration was an engraving from the the Dreams of Poliphilus, a celebrated book published in Venice in 1499 by Francesco Colonna. In it, the author explains that a hard head, like the elephant’s, is the best support for the burden of wisdom. Iconoclastic and irreverent, the Maison is a cross-section between fashion and design expressed in all its lines: haute couture, women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, fine jewelry, and fragrances. Mysterious and unconventional, a radical core intertwined with a non-standard elegance, Maison Martin Margiela remains classic yet visionary, daring yet ambiguous, with its avant-garde designs and timeless styles. Melin Building, 3939 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 101 25 MAR N I MARNI captures the mood of Miami’s Design District taking inspiration from the streamlined, rhythmic patterns of the Art Deco style for which the city is famous. The Evening Collection 2015 conveys a sense of luxurious lightness and instinctive sophistication. Charged with free-spirited nonchalance, outfits are cut-ups of contrasting elements oozing weightless, graphic purity. The color palette is nocturnal: tones of charcoal, midnight blue and deep green are sliced by touches of cream and tobacco with unexpected dashes of red. Fabrics are airy: bonded raffia, silk taffetas, georgette, double chiffon, cady. Furs add texture. Prints draw exotic blooms on nightly backgrounds: Mokara orchids, moonflowers, kapfu plants. The wildly sophisticated aura continues in the accessories: cut-out leather flowers on flat sandals, gold orchids decorate suede high-heels. Clutches and shoulder bags swarm in precious embroideries. Bijoux alternate modernist geometries with decadent flowers used for earrings, wristbands and brooches. One man, Michel Parmigiani, would be the founder, and the Sandoz Family Foundation the principal, and the symbolic town of Fleurier the seat of the brand, the cradle of traditions. Their shared vision for upholding the highest quality Swiss expertise drives them to offer the best. The brand’s unique culture of watch restoration, passed on by Michel Parmigiani more than thirty years ago, is the keystone of its identity. Palpable inside every modern timepiece, it attests to the “made-tomeasure” spirit of Parmigiani Fleurier. Until now, this one-of-a-kind project had never actually been produced. An avant-garde designer, Pierre Paulin anticipated with this project the necessary alliance between a changing world, new techniques and a living space that was conceived like a refuge, or an intimate safe house. Here, the body dictates its relationship with the space around it, placing a priority on personal use and keeping the outside world and all its intrusive informational excess at bay – without shutting it out completely.
