Globalization is changing education and expanding connectivity to existing disciplines
in colleges and universities including those of art and art history. Many art and
art history courses and gallery exhibitions have been interdisciplinary and globally
interconnected for years. Additionally, Eurocentrism is being reconsidered, as one
cannot assume that western values are the only values held by the world. At Tacoma
Community College, professors are developing new models for evaluating art of other
cultures and learning to interpret the work on its terms. As the world comes closer to
us through travel, and social networking, colleges and universities have incorporated
an interdisciplinary approach to the study of art and art history into the curriculum
and textbooks adding new chapters in non-traditional and non-western art. In addition,
Contemporary art has become internationalized in thematic exhibitions and biennials
in galleries and museums throughout the world.
Artist examples include:
El Anatusi, Sasa, 2004, aluminum and copper wire
Edward Burtynsky, Shipbreaking, Bangladesh, 2001-02, color coupler print
Andreas Gursky, Shanghai, 2000, c-print mounted on plexiglass
Shahzia Sikander, Pleasure Pillars, 2001, watercolor, dry pigment on Waski paper
The goal of the Global Perspectives exhibition is to create a dialogue and expand
awareness of other cultures throughout the world. Some subjects that could be
addressed are environmental issues, human rights, the human experience, and cultural
similarities and differences of all cultures. What have you learned about another
culture that you would like to share with the public?
Application deadline is Nov. 25, 2013. Entry fee is $15 [ $5 students & seniors]
