Position Title: Front of House Intern Organization: The Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) is a non-profit public art gallery dedicated to the research, exhibition, education and documentation of contemporary visual art as it is practiced locally through to internationally. It aspires to generate significant audiences for its innovative and diverse programmes through free access and a profile that is international in scope. The CAG is the longest standing independent public art gallery dedicated to presenting contemporary visual art in Vancouver. We deliver between ten and twenty exciting exhibitions and off-site projects each year, provide an extensive range of learning and public programs for adults, families and children, offer a series of residencies for Canadian and international artists directly contributing to the local scene, and publish insightful catalogues that create a lasting legacy of exhibited work. We do this while offering all of our programs free of charge through an admission by donation policy. We believe that access to, enjoyment of and engagement with contemporary art and the surrounding debates should be available and open to all. Description: The Front of House (FOH) Intern will provide support for exhibitions, programs and administration. Stationed at the front desk, he/she will answer queries and provide information to visitors regarding the Contemporary Art Gallery, its exhibitions and programs. They will also provide retail services that include the display and sale of exhibition catalogues, editions and memberships. Reporting to the Curator of Learning and Public Programs, and working closely on a daily basis with the Visitor Assistant, the FOH Intern will be a first line of contact for the gallery while providing support for the gallery team. Key responsibilities will include: • greeting and engaging in conversation with patrons, introducing CAG exhibitions to the general public • lead exhibition tours • maintain Front Desk log book and attendance statistics • monitor security • process daily sales of membership, publications and track publication inventory • organize mailouts • set-up and serve at opening receptions and special events • assist with exhibition installation and public programs • administrative support for all areas of the gallery as required Qualifications: This position is for an Undergraduate Student. Skills and Abilities • experience working with the general public • strong computer skills in a PC environment including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook • knowledge of contemporary art • outstanding verbal and written communication skills • level of comfort speaking to the general public • ability to exercise accuracy, judgment, tact and discretion • excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to manage conflicting priorities • able to work independently while part of a team Dates: This is a part-time internship (June 1 – August 28, 2015) working 2 days per week/6 hours per day/12-6pm. Occasional evening hours are required for exhibition openings and special events. Some flexibility is required as related to exhibition and programming schedules.
