Biology HS/Science Unit: 07 Lesson: 01 Transcription Vs. Translation KEY Objective: Differentiate between the processes and products of transcription and translation. Transcription Translation Purpose Make a copy of the genetic code contained in the DNA sequence into mRNA which can leave the nucleus. Synthesize proteins using the genetic code copied from the DNA in the nucleus by the mRNA stand. Process Enzymes transcribe or copy one strand of the DNA into a single-stranded mRNA molecule. These enzymes bind the following bases to form the mRNA strand: U binds with A, A binds with T, C binds with G, and G binds with C. mRNA binds to a ribosome, and tRNA brings in an amino acid and anticodon to build the amino acid chain (polypeptide chain or protein). Location in Cell Occurs in the nucleus Occurs in the cytoplasm End Product End product is a strand of mRNA. End product is a protein molecule. ©2012, TESCCC 10/15/12 page 1 of 1
