Matter- anything that has mass and volume Mass- the amount of matter in an object Volume- the amount of space an object takes up For a background on the atom go to: http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/refarticle.aspx?refid=761567432 Chemical Bonding: In very elementary terms, atoms bond to be comfortable or “happy”. “Happy” atoms are atoms whose electron shells are full. In order to fill the electron shells, atoms will share, give up, or take electrons from other atoms. This forces the atoms stay together or bond. Two or more atoms bonded together is called a molecule. The number of electrons needed to fill a shell is different depending on the shell in question. For example, the shell closest to the nucleus is full when two electrons are orbiting on it. While the next shell out can contain eight electrons. 3 Basic Types of Bonding: 1. Covalent- electrons are shared between atoms 2. Ionic- electrons are transferred from on atom to another 3. Metallic- if an atom shares its electrons with lots of other neighboring atoms, like gold
