Policies and Procedures for Mid-Term Exams, Lab Exam, and Final Exam
1) There are no make-up mid-term exams. Marks for the missed mid-term exam will be
reallocated over the remainder of the tests/exams in the course. Students who miss either
of the two lecture mid-term exams, or the lab exam, must provide a valid excuse with
documentation.
2) Students will write lab exams in their assigned lab sections
3) “Deferred” final exams can only be granted by the Assistant Dean, Undergraduate (for
Faculty of Science students), or by the Deans and/or Assistant Deans of other Faculties or
Federated Colleges. Deferred final exams cannot be granted by the course instructors.
Special Needs: Students in this course who, because of a disability, may have need for
specialized accommodations, should please discuss these accommodations with the course
instructor and contact the Disability Resource Office (Riddell Centre 251.15, 585-4631).
Information about iClickers
For this course, you are required to purchase an iClicker. These are handheld devices that
allow you to contribute to activities during lectures. You will receive credit for your answers:
every week (for 13 weeks) one in-class multiple choice question will be graded. Of these 13
questions, your best 5 will be counted, for a total grade out of 5 (so if you get 5 questions out of
13 correct, you will still get 5/5 for iClicker participation).
iClickers can be purchased at the bookstore, or you can buy used iClickers from students.
One source for used iClickers is the BUGS (Biology Undergraduate and Graduate Society)
website: (https://sites.google.com/site/uofrbugs/textbook-exchange-1)
In order to get credit for your answers, you need to register your iClicker online
(http://www.iclicker.com/support/registeryourclicker/).
Supplemental instruction
Supplemental instruction (SI) offers free out-of-class study groups to help you succeed in this
class. There will be three one-hour weekly sessions and you may choose to go to one, two, or all
three sessions. Students who regularly attend SI will save time studying, better master the course
content, and likely earn a better grade. SI sessions are held in LB-205. Further information can
be obtained from the Faculty of Science web site (http://www.uregina.ca/science).
More Information About Textbooks
Student evaluation forms from previous years have made it very clear that some students
find a textbook invaluable in BIOL 101, while other students consider a textbook to be
unnecessary. So, what to do about the textbook? To buy one or not to buy one? It really depends
upon you as an individual, and your learning style. Comments about the textbook from previous
course evaluations range from "The textbook is extremely useful" to "If you take good notes in
class, then you don't really need it". The instructors of this course recommend the purchase of a
textbook, but it is not obligatory.
The textbook for this course is "Reece, Urry, Cain, Wasserman, Minorsky & Jackson,
Campbell Biology, 9th edition". New copies of the textbook may be purchased at the U of R
Bookstore, and used copies may be purchased both at the Bookstore and the Student Union Book
Sale (held near the start of the Fall and Winter semesters). Another option is to purchase a used
copy of the 6th or 7th editions of Biology (by Campbell & Reece), or a used copy of the 5th
edition of Biology (by Campbell, Reece & Mitchell). Copies of the 5th, 6th and 7th editions
should be available at the Student Union Book Sale. Please note that "Biological Principles"
(also by Campbell) is an altogether different book, and is not the course textbook.
Copies of previous editions of the text will also be available in the lab room during the lab
periods. As well, copies of other standard Biology textbooks are available for use in the BIOL
101 lab room (LB 411) during most lunch hours (approximately 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM
weekdays).
How to use the Biology 101 UR Courses Web Site:
Go to the University of Regina homepage http://www.uregina.ca
Click the “UR Courses” link on the right side of the homepage
Type in your UserName and Password
Click the link: BIOL 101: Introductory Biology II
What is on the Biology 101 UR Courses Web Site?
Forums (a.k.a. Discussion Boards) – These are places to ask questions about laboratory
(Lab Questions) and/or lecture (Lecture Questions) material as well as to chat with other
students about non-biology topics (Coffee Shop). You may also use the Forums as a study
tool. Both questions and answers are accessible to everyone in the course.
Lab stuff – These pages are under development, but will include useful links and other
pages related to lab content.
Lecture Notes - You'll find pre-lecture PowerPoint notes from Dr. Finlay in this section
before each class. Click on the "Lecture Notes" file, and then click on the date for the notes
you are interested in. Note that completed lecture notes (after each class) will NOT be
provided to students.
