Is it Right to Fight?
Areas of learning
As Historians we will be studying Britain since the
1930s. We will be looking at factual evidence to
find out what life was like during World War II. We
will be researching what was it like to be a child
who may have been evacuated and we will be
exploring how scarce everyday essentials like food
were. We will explore rationing and will try to
recreate living conditions of the time.
We will be undertaking a class visit to Lincolnsfield
Children’s Centre, a hands-on WWII experience,
helping children to understand what life was like
at the time.
we will also be reading a book about a boy who
was evacuated called Goodnight Mister Tom and
War Horse, a book about a young man and his
horse in World War 1.
As Geographers, we will be studying maps and
globes to discover the places where fighting
happened during World War II. We will also look
at maps of this country to see where children
were evacuated from and to.
As Design Technologists we will be constructing
our own model Anderson Shelters. We will then
design our own modern interiors incorporating
our understanding of electrical circuits to create
lighting and air raid sirens.
As Artists we will use charcoal and watercolour to
create images of wartime Britain, including the
Blitz. We will be focussing on the works of L.S
Lowry from the thirties and attempting to recreate
our own replicas of his work.
Enterprise
As enterprising people we will:
Use our understanding of fifties pop and rock music
to write and perform original written tracks. We
will learn about the promotion of records through
sleeve designs, radio advertisements and poster
campaigns. We will perform our records to the
school and display the original sleeve designs in an
x-factor style competition whereby the winner will
receive a special prize.
Environment
As people concerned with our environment we
will:
Explore wartime phrases and philosophies such as
‘Dig for Victory’ and asking if they still hold today.
We will be trying to live off the land to see how we
can reduce our impact on the environment. We will
ask if there are any small changes we can make to
our eating habits that may help the environment.
Spiritual and moral
In our spiritual and moral development we will:
Ask the question ‘Is it ever right to fight?’ We will
use both our own experiences and the factual
evidence from history to help us try to answer this
difficult question.
We will be learning about Anne Frank and her
experience during the holocaust in World War II.
Communities
We will explore how communities can pull together
during times of trouble. We will be exploring
communities in our locality and beyond and
investigating how people need and rely on each
other. We will look at both communities that we
know and those in other parts of the United
Kingdom. We will relate this to our understanding
of the homefront during wartime Britain. (Dig for
victory, rationing, the blitz)
