Science Fair Proposal Form My Group members are: Name: _______________________________ Name: _______________________________ Our Question we will be exploring is: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Our primary independent variable will be: (we are looking for quantitative variables if possible) _______________________________________________________________________________ We will break down our independent variable in this way: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Our primary dependent variable will be: (quantitative variables are required) _______________________________________________________________________________ The means by which we will measure our dependent variable: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ In order to do this, we will need to control these variables: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Our hypothesis is: (this must be specific about what changes of the independent variable lead to what effects on the dependent variable) _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Our rationale for this hypothesis is: (explain why you believe your original hypothesis) _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Equipment and Materials needed: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ References: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Northern Secondary School **** Attach a 1 page description of how you plan to conduct your experiment **** Remember that the following projects are NOT permitted at northern secondary school □ No consumption of alcohol, caffeine, any drug or other substance which is not considered food. □ No excess consumption of food, water, excess sleep of exercise beyond normal levels of exercise. □ No privation (restriction of food, water, sleep, exercise, freedom of movement, etc…) beyond that which is normal. □ No experimentation on human subjects which might be regarding as humiliating, degrading or otherwise which might pose some psychological hazard to the test subject or to those who observe the testing (this includes those who are present at the science fair presentations). All experimentation must include a signed letter indicating informed consent. □ No experimentation on vertebrate animals or mollusks (octopi, squid etc…) which might be deemed potentially harmful to the animal. You would be permitted to do behavioral experiments on your family pet provided they would be acceptable as ordinary play or training. You may not conduct experiments which might be considered cruel in any way. You may not purchase such higher animals for the purpose of the experiment as this brings up ethical issues regarding what to do with the animals once the experiment is over. Marking Check-A-Bric 1. Independent variable is a legitimate independent variable. 2. Independent variable is clearly related to question. 3. Independent variable is quantitative. 4. Independent variable breakdown could plausibly be set as suggested. 5. Independent variable breakdown covers an adequate range of values with sufficient resolution. 6. Dependent variable is clearly related to the question. 7. Described means of measuring the dependent variable is doable. 8. List of controlled variable catches all the most important controls. 9. List of controlled variable does not include incorrect variables. 10. Hypothesis is relevant to the variable examined. 11. Hypothesis is specific. 12. Rationale for the hypothesis is logical, even if not correct. 13. Correctly identifies special needs. 14. Procedure is likely to yield results relevant to the question. 15. Procedure shows the authors have clearly thought about how to carry out the experiment. Procedure seems safe and does not present any ethical concerns Total Mark (out of 15) Comments.
