BASIC PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under general supervision, leads all aspects of SQL database development. This includes database architecture,
design, development, ETL design and development, stored procedure design and development, data modeling,
design of databases, BI data marts and data warehouses. Responsible for all aspects of SQL database support
including installation, maintenance, upgrades, performance tuning, back ups, restores, and integrity of SQL based
databases on a variety of platforms. Manages SQL Database Analysts and SQL Database Administrators.
Responsible for leading database tool evaluations and selections. Prepares recommendations to management for
improvements in database technology and processes. Works closely with the other I.T. associates in the areas of
application development, database management, network, electronic commerce, and technical support and training.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Responsible for the design, development and enhancement of SQL databases residing on a variety of
technical environments, assuring that the database architecture balances technical efficiency, performance,
business requirements, availability, maintainability and ease of use.

Responsible for the design, development and enhancement of Data Marts and Data Warehouses residing on
a variety of technical environments, assuring that the database architecture meets the performance and
business requirements in a maintainable and technically sound manner and properly supports our BI
objectives.
3.
Responsible for the design, development and enhancement of database components of applications. This
includes ETL and stored procedure design in collaboration with the application designers and architects.
Responsible for the database components to be implemented in a manner that meets the performance and
business requirements in a maintainable and technically sound manner.

Responsible for the integrity of databases including backing up all databases on a scheduled basis.
5.
Responsible for the development, testing and maintenance of restore procedures. Conducts periodic tests to
insure restores can be done quickly and accurately with the objective of minimizing disruption to the
business.

Responsible for database tuning to meet performance and availability requirements.
7.
Responsible for enterprise wide database and data warehouse architecture design to meet performance and
supportability requirements.
8.
Works with application and electronic commerce management to develop and maintain Topco’s database
standards and procedures.
9.
Assists application and electronic commerce development staff with project implementations and testing.
10. Assists in the evaluation and selection of appropriate database packages and related products to support I.T.
processing.
11. Assists I.T. Operations in the identification and resolution of production problems.
12. Responsible for the creation and enforcement of Change Management policies for all database systems.
Works with database personnel and Source Control Management to ensure reliable storage of project
information and deliverables.
13. Mentor and assist the development of subordinates in database technologies, processes, development
methodologies and design techniques.
14. Coordinates activities with network management staff, AS/400 application development teams, and AS/400
Database Administrator, and other technical support staff in all activities as needed to insure overall I.T.
objectives are met.
15. Provides training support to other I.T. associates as necessary to assure overall support of Topco’s business
needs.
16. As needed, participates in meetings and reviews with the end user community, and assists users with
operational problems.
17. Develops, maintains, and publishes Database Development Best Practices and Standards documentation
Assures all database development adheres to published standards.
18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Successful performance of these job functions should result in:

Business Applications supported as specified by well designed and performing SQL databases, ETL processes,
and stored procedures.
BI Applications based on well modeled data sources, data marts and data warehouses.
Databases that perform as specified.
Databases being appropriately maintained and upgraded.
Professional database change control procedures.
Professional database design documentation.
Professional database SOP documentation.
Timely resolution of system issues based on assigned priority and overall objectives of the I.T. department.
Qualifications:
Education:
Four year college degree in computer science preferred, or combination of education and work experience conferring
equivalent results. MBA a plus.
Technical skills:
Expert knowledge of SQL. Expert level skills in MS/SQL administration. Expert level database modeling and
design skills. Expert level business logic stored procedure skills. Data Mart and Data Warehouse design skills.
ETL skills including SSIS. Database backup, recovery and change control skills. DB2/400 database knowledge
desirable.
Previous experience:
Ten years or more experience in SQL database administration, architecture, and development.
