Bill Morgan is an instructor and member of the board at the Brantford Judo Club and training partner for other Judokas. He was introduced to judo in 1990 while competing as a member of the Canadian Blind Wresting team at the World Championships in Holland. Bill began his judo career in 1991 at the Brantford judo club. Since then, Morgan has competed in judo at numerous international events. Since wrestling is not on the Paralympic program he decided to venture into Judo. Bill’s determination and work ethic have allowed him to become a world-class competitor in judo. Since beginning judo, Bill has become an NCCP Level 2 Certified coach. Bill also currently holds the black belt rank of sandan. Bill has become the highest ranked judoka with a visual impairment in the history of Canadian judo Most recently, he won bronze in judo at the 2006 IBSA World Championships in France and at the 2005 IBSA Pan-American Championships in Brazil. He placed fifth in judo at the Athens 2004 Summer Paralympic Games and was seventh at the 2000 Sydney Summer Paralympic Games. He lost his vision at age five, and became involved in combative sports at age 11 while attending W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Brantford, Ontario. Competing in sports has been in his blood since a young age. Bill has recently qualified to represent Canada at the upcoming Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing China Bill has had a successful competitive career. Some of Bill’s highlights include: 5th at the IBSA World Championships, Madrid Spain, 1998 1st at the Panamerican Judo Championships, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 1999 7th at the Summer Paralympic Games, Sidney Australia, 2000 3rd at the IBSA World Championships, Quebec City, Quebec, 2003 5th at the Summer Paralympic Games, Athens Greece, 2004 3rd at the IBSA World Championships, Brommat France, 2006 When he is not training or competing on the mat, Morgan works full time at the School for the Blind he once attended in Brantford. ‘’I work with special need kids to help them adapt to life as a visually impaired person,’’ said Morgan. ‘’There’s some interest and questions about my sporting career and sometimes you inspire a few people. And there’s nothing I love more than helping someone go beyond what they expected they could achieve.’’ Bill has started a recreational judo club within the school; it is among thee most popular extra curricular activities offered. He truly is a hero to his students and to many who know him.
