Elbit Systems is a Market Leader in
Avionics and Aircraft Upgrades
Expanded business line embraces both Eastern and Western
platforms
Elbit Systems has earned international recognition in the aircraft upgrade market
and has maintained its leading position in the field. Using its expertise as an
integrator and developer of cutting edge next generation electronics defense
systems, Elbit Systems has expanded its line to encompass such features as
data link systems, data fusion expert systems and 3-D digital maps. With acrossthe-board capabilities and technologies, Elbit Systems is a world leader in
addressing entire platforms and upgrading existing aircraft with enhanced
performance, extended life and next-generation capabilities. In the majority of the
large-scale programs it performs, Elbit Systems performs and manages
multidisciplinary integration and lifecycle support. Additionally, it partners with
local industries, leveraging capabilities and sharing know-how and expertise.
Fighter aircraft of the past become fighters of the future through advanced full
scale programs encompassing integration of multirole A/A and A/G capabilities,
multimode radar, structural modifications, advanced avionics systems, display
and sight helmets, head-up displays, advanced weapons and pods. The full
spectrum of systems and products, including helmet mounted displays and
sights, mission computers, cockpit management systems and smart munitions
kits, has been broadened to include advanced laser designators, range finders,
optronic payloads and airborne reconnaissance systems - virtually whatever the
mission demands.
Over the past three decades, Elbit Systems has carried out major upgrade
programs that have met or even exceeded the diverse demands of air forces
worldwide. The following are just a few examples:
Teaming with Aero Vodochody of the Czech Republic on the upgrade of the
L-39 training aircraft equipped with advanced avionics for the Royal Thai Air
Force. Performing numerous F-5 modernizations, most recently for the Brazilian
Air Force, unleashing the “Tiger’s” potential, with advanced full redundant glass
cockpit including 3-color displays and operational features such as HOTAS
operation, MFDs, Weapon Delivery and Navigation Systems, Electronic Warfare
suites and the DASH IV Helmet.
For close to two decades, Elbit Systems has been the main avionics supplier for
Lockheed Martin and Israel Air Force F-16s, in production, development and
integration programs, supporting F-16 superiority in evolving operational needs.
Elbit Systems supplies systems for the F-16 such as color displays, HUDs, SMS'
and DVRs, CCIUs and CDEUs.
Recently, Elbit Systems was selected to supply smart 6"x6" color displays and
5"x4" UFCDs for the F/A-18E/F.
The Elbit Systems Group supplies avionics to major prime contractors such as
Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Embraer, Bell Textron, Eurocopter, EADS and
Sikorsky. Our next generation avionics products include mission computers,
Integrated C^2, 3-D digital maps, advanced audio systems, AMLCD displays,
display processors and enhanced vision systems.
Elbit Systems has a specialized niche in Eastern platform modernizations
providing total solutions, based on in-house core competencies and technologies.
Turnkey solutions go beyond systems and products to long-term maintenance,
technical support, full integration, installation and product training, often
partnering with local industries. Such upgrade programs include:
The MiG-21 "Lancer"- performed with Aerostar of Romania, which transformed
the MiG-21 combat aircraft into a high performance multi-role attack fighter,
demonstrating its expertise in integrating Western-designed avionics and
weapons into an Eastern platform;
Another example is the SU-25 whose cockpit modernization is based on
advanced flight concepts and extensive experience in upgrading the platform to
the “Scorpion” configuration. The upgrade incorporates a host of features
delivering superior performance capabilities. Its modular, open architecture
permits integration of new sensors, systems and weapons for years to come.
Design focus was also placed on enhanced Man Machine Interface (MMI) and
optimized operation including NATO compatible equipment .
With several upgrade programs currently in progress, and, through recent
contract wins, Elbit Systems is strengthening its presence in Brazil and other
Latin American countries.
L-39, PAMPA, Super Tucano and IAR 99 Lead-In Trainers have undergone
extensive Elbit Systems’ modernizations. Elbit Systems has also made inroads
into modernizing transport and surveillance aircraft, such as C-130s and the new
undergoing development transporter KC-390.
Already a leading company in Aircraft Upgrade programs, Elbit Systems also has
taken the lead in the Aircraft Trainers/Simulators area. Elbit Systems has
designed, developed and delivered operational and tactical, virtual and
embedded Trainers and Simulators to leading military forces worldwide. These
sophisticated training solutions for both Eastern and Western airborne platforms
are designed to maximize realism and minimize the often difficult transition to
advanced, complex platforms and missions.
In line with its total solution philosophy, it is expanding into the area of lifecycle
support services, formulating detailed plans for logistics support and even setting
up maintenance facilities at customer sites. In Romania, for example, a logistics
center has been set up based on the infrastructure created for the MiG -21
program.
With an eye to the future, Elbit Systems is engaged in development of next-layer
technologies based on the highly advanced systems. These will be used to
‘upgrade the upgrades’ over the next decade. Yet another area of concentration
is “Intelligent Avionics", decision support systems to counter the information
overload confronting today’s pilots. These systems will enhance situation
awareness, enabling pilots to concentrate more fully on their missions.
