Job Description Job title: Commercial Research Associate Department/School: Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation Grade: 7 Location: Department of Mathematical Sciences, Claverton Down Campus Job purpose The Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation (Bath IMI), established in early 2015, combines data analysis with statistical and mathematical modelling to help turn data into good decisions www.bath.ac.uk/imi. Our work addresses key challenges in mathematics and its applications and translates fundamental insight into economic and societal impact We are currently seeking a statistician to join our small team of Commercial Research Associates, whose primary remit is to solve short-to-medium term research problems for commercial and industrial clients, with the intellectual support of the academics involved with the Institute. Projects may emanate from a variety of different fields; current projects include working with clients in the energy and public health sectors. Reports to: Manager of Bath IMI Staff management responsibility None, although day to day supervision of other staff e.g. technical staff or supervision of doctoral or undergraduate students may be required. Main duties and responsibilities Responsible to the Director of the Institute, reporting through the IMI manager. 1 2 Conduct individual and/or collaborative research projects with a commercial focus. Take a lead in the experimental design and execution of the project. Liaise with commercial clients and with the IMI manager to scope projects; incorporate research ideas from academic staff in their solution. Human Resources Page 1 07/03/2016 3 Project management: e.g. timetabling and meeting project milestones; participating in regular discussions with collaborative partners. Liaise with key stakeholders/industrial partners and conduct focus groups. 4 Report results of research to clients and work with them to implement research as required. 5 Participate regularly in group meetings and prepare and deliver presentations to project team, internal and external stakeholders, clients or funders. 6 Assist with the supervision of graduate students and undergraduate project students and the assessment of student knowledge. 7 Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism to inform research activity. 8 Identify sources of funding and provide assistance with preparing bids to funding bodies contribute to securing of funds for research. 10 Disseminate knowledge of research advances to inform departmental teaching effort. 11 Writing up results of research and contributing to publishing of results in highquality peer-reviewed academic literature.
