Job Description Job title: Department/School: Grade: Location: Waste Operative Estates 2 University of Bath, Claverton Down Campus Job purpose To provide an efficient and effective day to day service for the University of Bath’s Department of Estates’ Facilities Section in the movements and processing of general, special wastes and recyclables. This will be achieved by involvement in the day to day operation of the materials recovery yard, collecting, pre-treating and sorting waste streams in accordance with University of Bath and Health and safety policies and procedures. Source and nature of management provided Team Leader (External) for direct line management and HR management. Work with and take instructions from Facilities Team Leader, University Hazardous Waste Manager, Waste and Recycling Manager and Facilities Administrator. Staff management responsibility None Special conditions A full driving licence and a current counterbalance fork lift competence operating certificate are required for this post. Due to the nature of the work you will need to be able to lift and carry a reasonable amount of weight. The work is outside in all weathers. A uniform, and protective clothing and footwear will be provided and must be worn, personal protective equipment and training will be provided as appropriate to the post. Page 1 09/02/2016 Main duties and responsibilities 1 To manage the waste compound and local area keeping in in a clean, orderly, safe and secure state. 2 To assist in the Hazardous Waste collection services, collecting transporting and depositing collections and completing internal waste transfer sheets all as directed by the Hazardous Waste Manager. 3 To collect confidential waste paper sacks for disposal from various University locations and deposit in the secure storage facility on the designated day. 4 To collect various items of IT and WEEE equipment for disposal from various University locations and deposit in storage areas appropriate to the specific waste stream. 5 To collect various items of scrap and waste material from University locations and deposit in appropriate storage areas prior to pre-treatment, if required to take this to a local scrap merchant. 6 To clear all fly tipping and dumped rubbish from University locations as and when seen using own initiative, and as directed, in a timely manner. 7 To break down items of scrap and waste material and separate into waste streams to comply with pre-treatment before onward transport by contractors. 8 To load skips and containers with pre-treated waste and scrap materials. 9 Maintain the lamp recycling crates and local area in a clean and orderly state. 10 To transport cardboard bales from the baler to the waste yard in preparation for onward transport by the University’s contractor’s vehicles. 11 To assist, as appropriate, with the loading of waste contractors’ vehicles. 12 To assist the movement of furniture and equipment as and when required. 13 To assist with the daily movements of general waste containers from various University locations. 14 To complete paperwork and provide management information as appropriate to the role. 15 To monitor the waste@lists.bath.ac.uk email, replying to emails giving information about when waste will be collected. 16 Be familiar with the required care standards regulations governing your post. 17 Maintain polite and good communication with your colleagues and staff at all times. 18 Answering general enquiries from visitors and giving directions to buildings. 19 Undertake health and safety training, to include lifting and carrying as appropriate to the post. Page 2 09/02/2016 20 Be prepared to receive and undertake further training as required. 21 Actively promote energy saving measures to colleagues whilst at the same time minimising your own environmental impact, using resources with minimum waste and increased recycling. 22 Ability to recognise unusual situations, etc. 23 Dealing with spills of loads and cleaning up spills. You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager.
