Pencil or Pen Agenda / Planner or other means to record daily & upcoming assignments and due dates Additional readings will be available to you in class or posted on our D2L page Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes Spanish III develops and builds on intermediate/advanced level listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Spanish. Through participating in and observing the Spanish language, students will determine the principles of building highly effective communication skills. Speaking will improve from the sentence level to the paragraph level. This course will provide you with the opportunity to: Conjugate verbs in the following tenses: present indicative, present progressive, preterit, imperfect, future, present perfect, present subjunctive, giving commands (imperative mood) Use all tenses listed above in the correct context of the sentence Perform on all levels - speaking, reading, writing, listening comprehension - with respect to the following thematic units: o o o o Travelling Sports Daily Routines Clothes & Shopping o o o o Legends & Stories Food & Restaurant Making movies School o o o Family & Relationships Environment Careers & Professions Read and understand narratives, short stories, books on a variety of topics Analyze and discuss some poems and short stories Compare & contrast the culture, language, customs and traditions of the US & Spanish-speaking countries Student Code of Conduct/ Class Expectations Respect your peers, your teacher, our materials, our class and our classroom Bring your materials to class each day, including your books Ask questions when you have them and for help when you need it Be prepared for class, having read your assignments or having completed your written work Participate fully during independent and class discussions & activities—Give 100% and contribute Integrity of academic work Take notes and use them; review, study & memorize them on a daily/weekly basis Make goals and work towards achieving them ¡Habla español as much as puedes! (Beginning with the 2nd MP only Spanish may be spoken in class!!) Grading Grading will be WEIGHTED and includes 3 categories: 10% Homework—out-of-class assignments, readings, etc 10% Classwork—work done during class, participation 80% Quizzes—any graded assessment and is reflective of a student’s performance; the QUIZ category can include assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, as well as other assessments 1 Spanish 3 Honors Sra. Jones 2014-2015 **NOTE** The use of electronic translators, online translators like Google translate, or any other internet service that provides translation of sentences or paragraphs is prohibited. As noted in the student handbook, using translators is cheating and will result in a zero for that assignment and carry the same consequences as cheating on anything else. Students may use an online dictionary to look up an individual word; they may not look up a sentence, a string of words, or conjugated verbs. Please use your notes, textbook, dictionary, or teacher as your resources for English-Spanish help. Participation Oral communication is an essential part of any language. The best way to become proficient in a foreign language is to listen intently and to speak it as much as possible so try your hardest hablar español en clase to your peers, to yourself, whenever and wherever, even out of class. Your homework, classwork and quiz grades will directly reflect your participation in and out of class. Homework & Classwork Homework & classwork will generally count for two to five points each, though some assignments may be worth more. Incomplete homework or classwork will be worth partial credit. HW assignments and classwork will be posted in class and on Skyward Expect to have HW every night It is strongly recommended that you exchange phone #’s with at least one other student in your class so that you may contact each other in case of questions Late homework will not be accepted, except for those students absent on either the day it was assigned or the day it was due. If students are present in class the day HW is assigned they are expected to have it completed the day of their return. Assessments Quizzes, tests and other assessments may include listening comprehension, speaking, sentence completion, sentence construction, translation, short answer, essay, question-answer, matching and true/false. You will be tested on vocabulary, grammar, listening comprehension, writing, and speaking. All assessments are cumulative. Expect at least 1 quiz or graded assessment each week. Attendance / missed assignments If you are absent it is your responsibility to complete all missed work; students are expected to complete all assignments listed in Skyward. Any make-up work due to absence will not be accepted after one week without penalty. If you are absent on the day of an assessment or the day before, you will complete it upon your return unless you have made prior arrangements with the teacher. This includes quizzes, tests, presentations, etc. Final Exam Students will take a final cumulative exam worth 20% of the final grade. The exam will include information from the entire year The final exam consists of a listening portion, oral interview, and a written exam. An overall final grade of 74% or higher is needed to move on to level 4 Spanish.
