SPANISH 3 Syllabus, 2015-2016 Ware Shoals High School Instructor: Mrs. Romy Diaz Phone: 864-456-7923-2121 Email: rdiaz@gwd51.org Room: WSHS 121 Planning: 4th Period Spanish 3 is designed to expand the students’ understanding of the Spanish language and its culture, and to enhance the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Oral language is stressed more than in previous classes and major emphasis is placed on advanced grammar and composition. Reading and writing skills are developed through studies of literary selections and students’ compositions. WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? Because the emphasis of the course lies in “communication” or oral proficiency, the Spanish 3 student will: Obtain a reinforcement of the previous year’s Spanish skills with emphasis on receptive and productive mastery of the present, past, and future tenses; Progress in the ability to communicate about daily needs, wants, and past experiences using previously learned and recombined vocabulary in familiar and unfamiliar situations; Ask and answer questions and maintain simple conversation in areas of immediate need, preferences, and other familiar topics; Improve upon learned pronunciation and phonetics skills; Read and understand the information presented in simple paragraphs, adapted selections, skits and simple poetry; Deal with everyday situation in the culture such as daily routines and travel; Develop oral and written skills in asking and answering questions, forming complex sentences and paragraphs; Develop an awareness of the way of life in several Spanish-speaking countries, and Master vocabulary necessary for the objectives of the course. This category also includes any daily grades or class work. To receive credit for assignments, they must be legible and complete when checked. Late homework will not be accepted unless approved by the teacher. Quizzes (30%) Quizzes will usually be announced. Oral presentations, group work, and skits are also counted as quizzes. If a student is absent, he/she will make up quizzes as soon as he/she returns. Tests (35%) The number of points earned will be recorded on each test. Tests will vary in format to include multiple choice, true/false, short answer, fill in the blank, essay, and oral/listening activities. Participation (15%) Students will be required to bring all materials to class daily and to participate in class. One participation point will be given for each day in each 9 week period (45 total). Although only one point is designated per day, students may lose more than one at a time if warranted. Students can lose points by not bringing materials, not participating (refusing to do work, sleeping, etc.), not completing the daily warm-up, etc. Students may also be awarded extra participation points for exemplary work or behavior. Exams: Midterm and Final Two exams will be given throughout the year: a midterm and a final. Both the midterm and final exams will count for 20% of each semester’s grades. The nature of the class (cumulative language skills) requires that the exams be cumulative. *Extra credit, when offered, will be available to the entire class. *Students will be encouraged to keep a list of their scores so they will always know their grade. MAKE-UP WORK THE STUDENT is responsible for all work missed due to absences. Students who are absent need to check in the daily folders to get handouts, graded assignments, etc. Also, I encourage you to get the phone numbers of several of your classmates so that you can call them to get any assignments that you missed. Students who are absence the day before an announced exam or test must still take the exam on the scheduled date. Work that was due on the date of an absence must be turned in at the beginning of the next day that you attend class. All make-up tests will be administered after school as scheduled by the student and teacher. Students WILL NOT be permitted to make up tests or other class work during class. If a student fails to make up a test or quiz more than 3 days after returning, the student will receive a grade of 0 for that quiz/test/assignment. I will not track you down to ensure that the assignment is completed. It is the responsibility of the student to keep up with makeup work.
