We are delighted to welcome Bishop Sarah who will preach and preside at the 10am Holy Communion service at
St Peter’s, Budleigh Salterton on 7th February. Services at All Saints and St Michael’s are cancelled on that day
so that everyone can come to St Peter’s. Please come and meet the new Bishop of Crediton.
LADRAM MUSIC NIGHT
After the fantastic success of last year’s SPACE music event generously hosted by Ladram Bay, another live
entertainment night for the village is to be held on Saturday 27th February. This year we have the award
winning 13 piece band, Loose Cannons, who will play a wide range of hits, covering many musical genres
including The Commitments, Blues Brothers and Tina Turner. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets priced at
£12.50 are on sale at Otterton Community Shop. Don’t miss this chance to put on your dancing shoes and
enjoy a great community event at Ladram Bay.
View from The Youth Minister
At the beginning of January I was wondering how many people make New Year resolutions, what they might be – and how
many have been kept by the end of February! Some children haven’t heard about “resolutions” while others, with help from
teachers, have taken the opportunity to set new learning targets or work habits for the term.
Other folk don’t wait for a New Year to make resolutions but either use a birthday, “now” or “tomorrow”. One resolution
could be not to make New Year resolutions! But, if you were thinking of changing something, what would it be? How would you
go about it? What could you do that would help you to make the change – and keep going?
Often the best way to maintain a change or resolution is to enlist the help of others. One example might be to join us for the
Lent Reflections which begin at 10.30 am on Wednesday 17th February at the Temple Methodist Church, repeated at 7.30 pm on
Thursday 18th February at St Peter’s Church. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with folk from all our churches to
worship and learn together and to encourage each other.
The Messy Church this month (Thursday 11th) will focus Jesus healing Bartimaeus, a blind beggar. Jesus asked
Bartimaeus “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord”, he said, “I want to see”!
As we move into the Lent period, what would we ask, for ourselves and for our community for the rest of 2016? Can we
move from a fear based life to a love based life (see View from the Vicarage Jan 2016)? What is our vision for the children and
young people whom we encounter? And what might Jesus’ response be? Why not look at the www.40acts.org.uk website and sign
up to be given some wonderful ways each day of Lent to reach out into the community?
There are so many opportunities to see God working in our community and our prayer is that as we reflect during this time
of Lent we notice and are mindful of what He is doing and can look forward to celebrating the joy of that first Easter morning.

SPACE Coffee Mornings
Jane and Martin Smith would like to thank all those who kindly supported their Coffee Morning on 13th January. It was a great
success and made £360. The Christmas Quiz was won by Jane Bennett. Again, many thanks to all those who took part. With
donations, it made £100, making a total of £460 towards the SPACE Appeal.
Angela and Catherine are holding a Coffee Morning for SPACE at Rosemary Cottage, 38 Fore Street, Otterton (tel 568802) on
Wednesday 24th February, 10.30am – 12noon. £2 for coffee and cake. Paintings, Bring & Buy, Raffle, Bric-a-Brac and Cake
Stall. All welcome.

OTTERTON PARISH COUNCIL
 At the next meeting of the Council on 1st February there will be a briefing to the Council by Justin Sharples of the South
West Ambulance Service concerning the options for the proposed purchase/hire of a defibrillator.
 The Council has been concerned about the health of the Horse Chestnut tree on The Green. A number of arboriculturists
have been contacted and the Council will discuss their findings at the next meeting.
 The route of a cable carrying electricity from a wave turbine off Alderney to Hinkley Point is proposed to pass up the
Otter Valley. Consultation will begin in May.
 After ten years in office the Council is very sad to be bidding farewell to our current Clerk, David Ottley, who has decided
to resign. Two excellent candidates applied for the post and a Committee from the Council selected Mr Mike Miller. Mr
Miller has recently retired from employment as a University Administrator and is living in Budleigh Salterton. He will
take up post on 19th April.

THE RALEIGH FEDERATION – from Carron Saunders, Executive Headteacher
Our overarching theme this term is “Oh What a Beautiful Day”. This theme provides the link for our topic work. In
Geography (at a level appropriate to their age) the children are studying our locality and a contrasting one. In Science, their learning
is based on Habitats. In the coming weeks, you might see the children out and about a lot, especially Class 3 (the Year 4 and 5
children) out on their weekly “Wellie Walks”! They plan to be out studying an aspect of the village and the surrounding area every
week, however challenging the weather!
The children in Class 1 (Year R and 1) will be visiting the school allotment regularly, in particular to study the changes in
the trees as we progress through the Spring. They are very excited about having a model 3-dimensional tree in their classroom on
which they can recreate the changes to the real trees they are observing.
In their professional development, the teachers are concentrating on the area of assessment (including the quality of
feedback and marking and reporting to parents) in this period in which the old levelling system of assessment has been abandoned
but the methods to be used for externally testing the children in Years 2 and 6 are still largely unknown!
Please keep an eye on the school website at www.otterton-primary.devon.sch.uk to see in more detail what we are “up to”
this term!

OTTERTON COMMUNITY SHOP UPDATE
After a very busy Christmas in the shop, we are now heading to the end of our financial year and a stocktake. We have had
excellent reports about the turkeys ordered from Pyne’s Farm – we hope to be able to offer them again next Christmas.
This year will see a new range of promotions featuring our local suppliers. The first of these will include a special offer on our
very popular Whistlefish Cards (from Cornwall). Two cards for £2.50 until 14th February. A lovely new selection now in the shop.
Queenswood, who supply our super quality dried fruit, muesli and baking ingredients, is also featured this month. They also
supply our Wessex Mill flour which is very competitively priced and excellent quality. Come and see our ‘blue star’ products soon.

OTTERTON TWINNING ASSOCIATION
This year marks the Fortieth Anniversary of the formal Twinning between Otterton and Vieux. The occasion will be
celebrated in Vieux from 17th to 20th June, when the Otterton contingent makes its visit to France. A full and entertaining
programme has been planned in and around the Vieux area, including receptions and a dance. This year we are particularly keen
that as many past, present and new members as possible attend.
There are a number of homebased events before the visit: on 20th February we are holding a Quiz Night and Curry
Evening in Otterton Village Hall; the Annual General Meeting will be in the same location on 16th March; and we have a
Shakespeare Evening and St George’s Day Event in East Budleigh Village Hall on 23rd April.

your finished arrangement. There are light refreshments provided (tea, coffee and biscuits) along with all your flowers and sundries

LITTLE OTTERS PRE-SCHOOL
This term the children at pre-school have enjoyed learning about people who help us in their environment. The
role play area has enabled them to use their imagination and creativity to enjoy a fire station, post office and a
bakery, they have baked bread and cakes and enjoyed eating the fruits of their labour. A visit from a Royal Marine
found the children looking at the supplies needed to live outside and learning to march around the setting. We are looking forward
to further visits from the fire brigade and lifeboat as well as dentists and lawyers. We would like to thank everyone who has taken
the time to help enrich the children’s curriculum experience so far this term.
On 27th February Sophie Wyn-Evans is organising a Mardi Gras party as a fundraiser for the pre-school. For the
carnival party fancy dress for everyone is welcome and the entertainment will include games and a celebratory
snack. Tickets are £2 per child and are available from Little Otters Pre-school. Thank you for your support.
EAST BUDLEIGH CHESS CLUB: The East Budleigh Blitz Chess Championship will take place in February. As
the title of the competition suggests these games will be played at a fast time rate and hopefully will lead to many
exciting moments. This event is open to all club members and any non-club player who is willing to pay the fee of £30.
If interested please get in touch with the club secretary. The Club Ladder competition is now under way and various prizes are on
offer. A special prize is available for the 1st Lady to enter. The beauty of these games is that they can be played at home and not
necessarily on club nights. East Budleigh CC look forward to their next fixture which will be at home to Exeter Gambits in the
Rapid Play league.
The Exeter & District Chess League results can be found at the excellent web site:
http://exeterchessclub.org.uk/content/exeter-district-league-results-201516 The club meets on the second Thursday of every
month. Next meeting: Thursday 11th February at 7:00pm at All Saints Church Hall. For further information, contact Brian
Gosling on 442060 or email brigosling@aol.com

HISTORY OF OTTERTON………..Did you know?
Otterton Schools (3) – The 1873 Directory states that the Boys’ school-house was still in The Manor House and the girls
and Infants were in the new school-house. Between 1870 and 1882 four Schoolmasters were appointed. Then in 1882
Courtenay Williams was appointed Master. The new School building was suitable for 125 boys and girls and the
average attendance was 85. There were also 55 infants with Miss Ellen Bamsey, Mistress. By 1902 Mr Williams’ wife
Lucy was School Mistress and she continued as Head Mistress on his death in 1905. Two years later a series of
photographs of the staff and pupils were issued showing a successful school under Mrs Williams.
