This used to be because we trained GP registrars (qualified doctors training to be GPs) bur more recently we have also regularly taken medical students from the Peninsular Medical School. Our intake of students varies from those in Year 2 to those in Year 5 (final year). The Peninsular Medical School has now been going for approximately 8 years and continues to grow year on year. It was voted 8th best medical school on a student exit poll last year and its numbers continue to grown. It has been well established that the quality of undergraduate teaching is better in the community than in the acute trust. So far we have had an excellent response from the students who have been through our doors. This overwhelmingly positive response has been largely due to the friendliness and willingness to help, from you, our practice population. As one of the main student trainers I have witnessed this at first hand and would like to thank you for your continuing support with our training status. We could not do this without you and the better the training the better the next generation of doctors. Thank you for your continuing support. Ben Hallmark Welcome to our new registrar Hello everyone, I am the new Registrar at Budleigh Medical Practice, and I'm very pleased to be back. I came here as a 5th year medical student 5 years ago, and now I'm back as a final year Registrar. I trained at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical School London, and since I qualified I've worked in Plymouth, Lewisham and more recently the Royal Devon and Exeter, and Imperial Surgery Exmouth. I grew up in Exmouth, and so having done my time in London at University I was keen to come back to East Devon to settle. Budleigh Medical Practice is an amazing place to work, all the GPs are lovely and extremely knowledgeable, and I feel very fortunate to be here for the next year where no doubt I will learn a lot. I look forward to meeting many of you over the next year. Two of Our members - Jim Delves and David Light - carers themselves - have produced a booklet entitled Dementia Carers' Pathway which is a comprehensive document that has proved to be of immense value to patients and carers NHS Devon is using this publication as one of its sources of information for dementia patients and there carers. The SCfD has also been very active in the provision of Memory Cafes. Following up this work, the SCfD is now giving publicity to the South West Dementia Brain Bank, and the Brains for Dementia Research Group, based on Bristol University. The co-ordinating centre for the scheme is Kings College: London: Manchester, Newcastle and Oxford Universities are also being involved as assessment and donation centres. It is estimated that around 750,000 people in the UK currently have dementia and that number will probably double in the next thirty years. Breakthrough research is clearly urgently needed.
