St Peter’s Stonesby All are welcome Come and join us for Family Services, Matins or Communion Our Church Doors are open every day during daylight hours A little bit of our History. Stonesby is mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Stovenby. This means the “village beside the tree stump”. St Peters church is one of a dozen or so locally which were built by the monks from Croxton Kerrial. It was built during the 12th and 13th centuries from local stone, which is a mixture of Limestone and Ironstone, and some quoins from Ketton. Its most striking feature is an original Norman font in the centre of the main aisle. In common with all buildings it has been subject to many modifications over the centuries. Some are obvious, others less so. The most perplexing is an archway in the north wall of the Chancel. Started but never finished and not detectable from without! The views from the top of the church tower are difficult to beat anywhere in the County. The last major restoration project was completed in the 1890s and set out the pews in the church as we find them today. Our Regular Services Services are held on the second and third Sundays of each month at 9.30 am. On the 2nd Sunday we have BCP Communion 9.30pm On the 3rd Sunday we have Matins for 8 months of the year; and we have a Family Service for the other 4 months of year.
