From The Revd Pennie Hartopp
Summer is here; the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, will occur soon on 21st June, together with those
two other equally important symbols of British summer time – Wimbledon and the strawberry season – all of which
point us towards the meaning and promise of summer and of having a bit more time to enjoy a slower, more relaxed
routine for a few weeks.
Summer is seen by many as a time for looking forward to wheeling out the barbeque, for getting out and about
more and for meeting up with family and friends; for taking a holiday or even for staying at home and having what is
now called a ‘staycation’. Equally, with school holidays just around the corner, the next few weeks are eagerly looked
forward to by both pupils and teachers as they all take a well earned rest; and resting is what lies at the heart of the
holidays. However, it is how we choose to enjoy them, for they are intended to be holy days of rest and refreshment.
Seen in this way then, summer holidays actually have a spiritual value and purpose in life and take on a deeper
significance for our well being and humanity; being opportunities not just to recharge our inner lives, but also to
reconnect with the joy of life and to receive this as a gift from God. After all, as we are reminded in Genesis in the
creation stories, God looked, enjoyed, declared everything created as good and then rested when the work of creating
was completed.
However you choose to spend the summer holidays, may you in your way find them to be a time for enjoyment,
goodness and rest.
With love and prayers for a happy and restorative holiday time.
Pennie

Class 3 from Otterton C of E Primary School will be hosting a Coffee Morning in the Village Hall on Friday 3rd July from

OTTERTON GARDEN CLUB
Our Spring events are now completed for this year. Our next event is the Autumn Show. Now is the time to get
sowing so you are ready with your entries for Saturday 12th September. To see the different classes, go to our website

FROM PCSO SARAH TRAYHURN 30110
I have been made aware that there have been a few issues recently at the play park in the village (Jubilee Field). I
attended last week and noticed that some of the equipment had been damaged considerably and there was a lot of litter
in the area. Some of the users of the park have been using very bad language and making unpleasant comments and
generally behaving in an antisocial manner.
I am sure you would agree that this is unacceptable and is making the area unpleasant for users, especially little
ones. I will be patrolling the area when able and engaging with the school, but if I could ask parents to assist with
speaking to their children and just reminding them about behaviour when out and about in the village, I would be very
grateful.
I will be attending the Community Shop on 15th July at 2pm. This is an opportunity for residents to speak to me
and raise any policing concerns or issues. I have joined the world of social media and can now be found on Twitter! If
anyone would like to follow me, I can be found under @ExmouthPolice.

LITTLE OTTERS PRE-SCHOOL
As the 2015 summer term draws to a close for Little Otters, we are busy with all sort of activities
which will make the most of the warmer weather and also ensure the older children, who are
preparing to make the transition to school, are as confident as they can be. Little Otters has a close
working relationship with both Drakes and Otterton C of E Schools and during July the children will enjoy visits to the
schools and the Reception class teachers will visit them in the setting. This helps them to become familiar and at ease
for the next big step in their development. Those children who are remaining at pre-school for another year are of
course not forgotten, with trips to the beach, an outing for the pre-school and toddler group to the play park on the Maer
on Exmouth seafront and an end of term party. Little Otters will close for the summer on 22nd July and reopen in
September. Places are available on most of our sessions in the Autumn Term, so if you have a child who is a rising
three, do come and visit us. To arrange a date, just call in or phone during session times on 445825.
THE OLD VICARAGE
The residents and staff of The Old Vicarage would like to thank all those who supported the recent Annual Coffee
Morning. The event raised £2,225.65 and we were able to send a cheque to Otterton School for £1,500 and a cheque to
Children’s Hospice Southwest for £745. Thank you for helping to achieve such a magnificent sum.
EAST BUDLEIGH CHESS CLUB: On Saturday 6th June Grandmaster Keith Arkell played simultaneously
against an East Budleigh combined team. The proceedings started in a grand manner with the ringing of
wedding bells at All Saints Church! Then in a double round display Keith played 18 games against his
opponents without loss and conceding no draws. This was an impressive display by one of England’s finest
grandmasters. Keith’s endgame skill and his famous Caro Kann opening was much in evidence throughout the
afternoon. Chris Scott and Malcolm Bell were awarded book prizes for best games – nearly achieving draws against
the grandmaster. We would welcome anyone at the club with an interest in chess, of whatever ability. There is always
an opportunity for stronger players to play in teams in the Exeter & District Chess League but this need not deter you if
you would rather play on a less competitive basis. The next meeting: 10th September at 7pm at All Saints Church
Hall. For more information, contact Brian Gosling on 442060 or email brigosling@aol.com

HISTORY OF OTTERTON………..Did you know?
The Post Office and Shop (4) – William Freeman was a shoemaker and had moved to Otterton from Sidmouth in 1871.
Appointed Postmaster, he turned his cottage into a shop and post office in 1880, which he and his son George built up
into a very successful business. The cottage had been leased from the Rolle Estates by Mary Anne Pile and William took
over the lease in 1898. He died in 1905 and George continued as Postmaster. He later took Harry Genge, who had been
Lord Clinton’s valet, into partnership and they enlarged the shop and post office with an extension to the cottage in
1923. Harry died in 1948 and his nephew Wilfred Manns became sub-postmaster/shopkeeper.
