This is an intensive course and the workload corresponds to three full weeks of classes
(Monday to Friday for 3 weeks). The instructional hours are the following:
 Class time: 8:30 am – Noon (3 hours) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
 Additional independent class time: 3 hours each on Tuesdays and Thursdays
(mandatory).
(Additional daily time studying online completing assignments is also part of the workload.).
Course Description. This is a hybrid course. It combines online and in class studies. Students will
invest time studying, practicing and listening using the online resources on their own. The
time in class will be dedicated to reviewing and oral practice. Students will begin to
communicate in Spanish by means of an integration of different learning activities in class
and online designed to understand grammar, practise speaking, increase vocabulary, and
develop fundamental reading and writing skills.
Course Objectives:
As a result of successfully completing this course the student will:

Develop communication skills including the ability to converse, read and write in Spanish. In
order to do this the student will learn basic concepts of grammar including the use of verb tenses,
building vocabulary, and practising speaking Spanish in Class and Laboratories. Progress will
be measured through the use of regular written and oral assessments.
Expand the awareness of the Spanish-speaking world, including aspects of culture, family life,
geography and history, deepening their understanding of the context in which the Spanish
language flourishes.
Required Texts and Materials:
Required: El linea. Online Spanish Learning System.Version 3.0. The student will be responsible
for purchasing the password to access the online material.
Recommended: Blanco, José – Donley, Philip. Vistas: Introducción a la lengua española. Third Edition.
Vistas Higher Learning. Boston, Massachusetts 2008. (This textbook provides the same material that the
online book presents. It is recommended for those students who prefer to have a paper copy and keep a good
reference book)

Attendance and Participation: this course will follow the guidelines found on page 43 of the Academic
Calendar
Online work: the student is responsible for completing each chapter of the online assignments by the time of
a chapter test. Any late assignments will affect the grading
Quizzes: Every day the students will be assessed on vocabulary and verbs conjugation.
