LEARNER OUTCOMES Students will be able to: 1. present oneself and others, describe oneself and others, and talk about plans. (chapter 1) 2. talk about weekend plans and getting from one place to another, and narrate past weekend activities. (ch. 2) 3. plan a meal, order in a café, talk about favorite foods, and shop for food at a market. (chapter 3) 4. plan one’s free time, talk about friends and neighborhood, and discuss relations with others. (chapter 4) 5. discuss sports, fitness and health, and talk about one’s daily activities. (chapter 5) 6. discuss where one lives, renting a house, and talk about the past. (chapter 6) 7. shop for clothes, and compare people and things (chapter 7) 8. discuss summer vacations, make travel arrangements, and make future plans. (chapter 8) 9. use and understand the present tense well. 10. speak and write in conversational past tense. 11. understand the use of the conversational and imperfect past tenses. 12. understand the similarities in vocabulary between English and French. 13. understand cultural similarities and differences relating to the above topics. PARENTAL SUPPORT 1. Learn some French with your child; be enthusiastic! 2. Expect your child to have 20-30 minutes of homework every day. 3. Review vocabulary every week day with your child. 3x5 index cards make excellent flash cards. 4. Encourage good study techniques such as studying every day, making and using flash cards, studying/speaking with a friend, improving skills with web sites, and using the planner. 5. Encourage cultural events such as exhibits, plays, restaurants, and opportunities such as Concordia Language Villages, our travel program, and our exchange program with Tours, France. CLASSROOM RULES COOPERATION 1. Be in your seat when the bell rings and wait for your teacher's dismissal. Refer to the tardy policy in your planner. 2. You may bring water to class. Keep the classroom clean. PARTICIPATION 1. Participate actively every day for the entire block by having all materials, speaking French, and actively listening. Some inappropriate actions are not paying attention and doing other work. 2. Help your classmates to do their best. All electronic devices must be in your backpack. PREPARATION 1. Bring covered Discovering French Blanc textbook and workbook, notebook or 3-ring binder, folder, planner, completed assignments, pen or pencil, and eraser to class every day. 2. Follow directions RIGHT AWAY. RESPECT 1. Keep your hands and feet to yourself. 2. Raise your hand and use respectful language. 3. Allow your voice and behavior to enhance everyone's learning. 4. Ask for permission to use classroom equipment (phone, overhead, TV, VCR, etc.) BEHAVIORAL CONSEQUENCES 1. First disruption - warning. 2. Continued disruptions during one class period - seating change and conference with the teacher. 3. A pattern of disruptions over two days - phone call home and Saturday School. If your behavior does not improve, you will have a conference with the 4th Floor Administrator. REWARDS FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR 1. Lots of learning! 2. Compliments. 3. Holiday celebration. ACADEMIC GRADING 1. You are graded in all language skill areas (speaking, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary and grammar). You will be graded through IPAs, quizzes, daily assignments, and culture points. 2. IPAs = Integrated Performance Assessments are a way to measure what you can actually do with French. Can you understand? Interact? Speak? Write? 3. Interpretive IPAs assess your listening and reading comprehension abilities. 4. Interpersonal IPAs assess your ability to speak spontaneously with another person about a topic in French. This IPA will be done mostly during class time with a partner chosen at random and assessed privately. 5. Presentational Writing and Speaking IPAs assess your ability to write and speak in French with preparation. 6. Quizzes will be worth 10-20 points. 7. Assignments are worth 5 points. Most are in your workbook. They are on my web page. See “Assignments” section below. You should spend 30 minutes a day studying and reviewing. 8. 75 culture points are to be earned each term through the documented completion of three activities outside of class. See your culture points sheet. 9. Grading percentages are: 100-97 A+, 96-93 A, 92-90 A-, the same for 80s B, 70s C, 60s D. 10. Points will be weighted: Interpretive IPAs 25%, Interpersonal IPAs 25%, Presentational IPAs 25%, Quizzes 10%, Culture 10%, Daily Homework 5%. 11. A grade of “C” or better is recommended to continue to French 3. Your final IPA will determine your ability to go on to the next level. WORLD LANGUAGE CHEATING POLICY 1. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, using cheat sheets, writing on your desk or hand, copying, misusing software or Internet programs which translate for you, having excessive assistance from a native speaker or a person with more advanced language skills, or any activity that is generally considered to be dishonest. 2. The consequence for cheating is NO CREDIT, 0 points. Refer to your student handbook. 3. If you really want to help your friends, don’t share answers, EXPLAIN the material. ASSIGNMENTS 1. Full credit is earned for assignments fully completed on time. 2. 1/2 credit is earned for assignments half or more completed, but not fully completed, on time. 3. NO credit is earned for late assignments, except those due to excused absence. MAKE-UP WORK 1. It is vital that you are in class every day. Participation is the key. 2. It is YOUR responsibility to inquire about make-up work. 3. You have two days for each day of absence to make up work. 4. If you are absent on the due date, the previously assigned work is due upon return. Sign to indicate you have read and will abide by this information. Return to class by Wednesday, September 7.
