Review Sheet FINAL CUBA 1. What is a compound? Two or more elements chemically combined. 2. What is the difference between a substance and a compound? A substance could only contain one element, while a compound must contain 2 or more elements. 3. What could you use to find the volume of an object? Ruler (LxWxH), Graduated cylinder, or beaker for volume. 4. What is the difference between mass and weight? Mass is determined by the amount of matter in an object, while weight is a force caused by gravity. 5. Run through a phase change from lowest amount of energy to highest amount of energy. Solid—slow moving particles with little energy melts Liquid—faster moving particles with more energy boils (or vaporizes) Gas—fastest moving particles with a lot of energy 6. Why doesn’t the temperature of a substance change when it undergoes a phase change? The energy is going into breaking bonds between molecules rather than making the molecules move faster. 7. What is density the measure of, what are the three variables of the equation? Density measures how much matter is contained in a certain space. D=M/V, M=DV, V=M/D 8. If oil is poured into water, what happens to it? Does it go to the top or bottom? Which is denser? When oil is poured into water it will float to the top because it is less dense than the water. 9. What is Archimedes principle? The buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. 10. What is viscosity, which is more viscous molasses or water? Viscosity measures a fluid’s resistance to flow. Molasses is more viscous than water because it doesn’t flow as well. 11. What experiment did Neils Bohr do? What about Rutherford? Neils Bohr experimented with atoms having energy levels for the electrons. Rutherford did the gold foil experiment which proved that the nucleus was at the center of the atom and contained the positive charge. 12. How many protons, neutrons and electrons does Neon-21 have? Protons—10, Neutrons—11, Electrons—10 13. What is an isotope? An isotope is an atom of an element that has a different number of neutrons than other atoms of that element. 14. What is an ion? An ion is an atom that has lost or gained electrons. 15. What is positive, negative, and neutral in an atom? Protons—positive, Neutrons—neutral, electrons—negative 16. The atomic number represents what? In a neutral atom it also represents the number of what subatomic particles? Atomic number = number of protons. in a neutral atom, also electrons 17. Do noble gasses bond with other atoms? Why or why not? Noble gases do not bond with other atoms because they already have a full valence shell. 18. What are valence electrons, why do atoms bond ionically? Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost energy level of atom. Atoms bond ionically when they become ions by gaining or losing electrons. 19. What is true about all group 1 atoms? They have 1 valence electron and are therefore highly reactive. 20. What is a polyatomic ion? Name a few. A polyatomic ion is when two nonmetals bond together and form a charged compound. Carbonate, Nitrate, Hydroxide… 21. What is a chemical formula? How many atoms are in Cu(NO3)2? A chemical formula shows the number of atoms of each element in a compound. There are 9 atoms in Cu(NO3)2. 22. What is the difference between a physical and a chemical change? A chemical change creates new compounds, while a physical change does not. 23. What are the types of reactions that can take place between elements and compounds? The types of reactions are synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion. 27. What is the chemical formula for Magnesium Sulfate? Magnesium Sulfide, and Magnesium Fluride? Mg(SO4)2, MgS, MgF2 28. Write the name of the following, CaCO3, NaCl, BeS, CuSO4, NH4Cl. Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Beryllium Sulfide, Copper Sulfate, Ammonium Chloride 29. Write the metric system base units for volume, mass, force and pressure. Volume—liter, Mass—gram, Force—Newton, Pressure—Pascal 30. What is a mixture, compound, and element? A mixture is when 2 or more substances are not chemically combined. A compound is two or more elements chemically combined. An element is the smallest unit of matter that has specific properties.
