Summer Reading Project
Character Scrapbook
Learners are to produce a scrapbook that the protagonist of the novel
would have created. The scrapbook will contain at least seven pages.
Learners do NOT need to buy a scrapbook, but may create a
scrapbook-like project.
Part I: Memorable Items
Create two pages from the protagonist’s scrapbook including items that the
character may have saved as a reminder of an important time in his or her life. You must
have a minimum of five items with a brief description of the importance.
Ex: Harry Potter- a straw from his Nimbus 2000 broomstick.
Part II: Significant Scene
Choose a memorable or significant scene from the novel and write about it.
Describe the scene (what happens, who is involved, etc.) and why it is significant to the
novel. Maximum length is one page- it should fit on a scrapbook-sized page.
Ex: Harry Potter- The Ministry of Magic fight scene
Part III: Quotes
Compile a list of ten quotations from the entire book. Create a page or two
in the scrapbook with the quotes, the page number of each quote and an
explanation of why the quote is important.
Ex: Harry Potter- “Because Snitches have flesh memories” –
Hermione Granger pg. 127. The snitch Harry caught in his mouth held
an important item that Harry uses later in the story.
Part IV: Character Descriptions
Create two scrapbook pages that give the vital statistics for each of the major
characters in the novel. Is he/she the protagonist/antagonist? What is his/her relationship
to the main characters? How does the character enhance the story?
Ex. From Harry Potter- Draco Malfoy. Draco is part of a group called the
Death Eaters. The Death Eaters, lead by Lord Voldemort, is trying to rule the
wizarding world. Draco, being the same age as Harry, antagonizes Harry from
their first day at Hogwarts. ETC.
