Course Expectations Honors English 10 A Trimester 1 2015-2016 Conor Meehan meehanc@northandoverpublicschools.com Extension 50125 @MrMeehanNA Course Overview English 10 exposes students to a comprehensive study of literature from classic to contemporary. Student work will be centered on critical thinking concepts, including Analytical reading of literature, vocabulary skills, and frequent assignments of analytical and persuasive composition. Students will engage in seminar discussion, self-evaluation, and collaboration. The course will culminate in major independents research project. MCAS preparation is integrated throughout the year. This means students should bring a pen or pencil, notebook, and any reading materials needed. Students must have a 3-ring binder dedicated to Sophomore English and notebook paper. Third trimester will culminate in a project covering all 3 terms so it is of the upmost importance that students keep all material they are given. Students are subject to notebook checks throughout the term. A folder will be provided to the students to hold onto all major writing assignments and assessments. This folder will remain in the classroom to track student progress. Grading Policy Student grades will be determined by the total number of points accumulated by the end of each marking period. Typical possible point totals are as follows: Reading Quizzes: 50 points Notebook checks: 50 points Vocabulary Tests: 100 points Unit Tests: 110-120 Points Essays: 125 Points Homework and Classwork: 10-50 points Homework Policy Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. It is the student’s responsibility to complete homework. It is due at the beginning of class. Late homework will be accepted one day late for half credit, beyond that zero credit. If you are absent you have two days to complete assignments. Attendance/Make-up Policies Your attendance is expected everyday. If absent, it is your responsibility to retrieve and make up missed assignments and notes. Any assignments due the day you are out are expected when you return. Any quizzes or tests you miss should be made up when you return. Please refer to the student handbook for the school’s policy on absences, credit reduction and makeup privileges. Extra Help I am always available for extra help by appointment. I am in every morning for extra help, so feel free to stop in. Please see me to schedule a time after school for extra help. Class Behavior My classroom has one golden rule: If you disrupt my ability to teach or your classmates’ ability to learn then there is an issue that needs to be addressed. The first time you disrupt the class you will receive a verbal warning. The second time, your name will be placed on the board and you will be asked to come see me after school. Failure to do so will result in office detention. Please respect the classroom. Do not write on the desks. Pick up trash. No food in class. Cell phones, I-pods, and hats will not be permitted during class. Please have them silenced and in your bag for the duration of class. Tardy Policy Arriving to class later will not be tolerated. If arriving late, please sign in on the tardy sheet, located on the back bulletin board. Quizzes and Exams Quizzes can be announced or unannounced throughout the trimester. If you are absent you should make up the missed work within two days. Unit exams will always be announced. The format of the exams over the trimester will vary. For any take home essays, projects or exams, the due date will always refer to the beginning of class. Any assignments passed in late will receive a letter grade deduction for every day it is late.
