LATIN SUMMER READING 2013
Students Entering Latin II should read the stories about Cogidubnus’ court from the Cambridge Latin Course, Unit 2, Stage 16, pp. 74 - 79. The stories are: Belimicus Ultor ; Rex Spectaculum Dat, I & II ; and Quintus de Se .
Students should be prepared to take a translation test during the first week of school. Students should also review the vocabulary from Stage 1 through Stage 15 of the Cambridge texts.
Students Entering Latin III should view a film focusing on the mysterious 9 th
legion. Three such films have been produced within the last few years. They are: The Last Legion (2007), Centurion (2010), and The Eagle (2011).
Students should be prepared to discuss the film they viewed in a brief essay on the first unit test. Students should also review and master the vocabulary from Stage 1 through Stage 25 of the Cambridge texts.
Students entering Latin Prose should go to http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/diesirae.html and read the text of the Dies Irae, commonly attributed to the authorship of Friar
Thomas of Celano. Students should listen to the various musical versions of the hymn from the Requiem Mass by Verdi, Mozart, Berlioz, Krzystof Penderecki, and Andrew Lloyd Weber. Students should write a short Essay (in English) of three to five paragraphs comparing and contrasting the style of TWO the composers. Be sure to consider how well each composer has interpreted the lyrics of the hymn in his music.
